CPEIC only cardiac surgery centre in S Punjab


Monday, July 16, 2012 - Multan—Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi Institute of Cardiology (CPEIC) is the only hospital in South Punjab that is offering the facility of paediatric cardiac surgery, said Executive Director CPEIC, Dr Rana Altaf.

In an exclusive interview with APP on Sunday, Dr Rana Altaf said that two paeds undergo cardiac surgery daily in the facility in addition to surgeries of adult patients.

He said they were conducting around 1,300 surgeries annually and 200 to 250 patients visit emergency while 400 to 450 patients get treatment from Out-Patient Department (OPD) free of charge daily.

Asked about the expansion of the existing emergency, he said the 54-bed emergency would be operational next month making it a 68-bed.

On the generation of funds, Dr Altaf said that they had a constituted donor club, “Friends of Cardiology” and affluent people were donating generously to it.

To a question, he said that 88 per cent of the treatment of deserving and poor patients was free. Dr Altaf said the number of angiography machines would be three after purchasing a new one and added that they were buying a CT angio machine soon to facilitate patients.

Asked about the shortage of anaesthetists, he said there was an overall shortage of them in the country and they needed them desperately.

“We have only two anaesthetists including myself. The facility can accommodate 200 patients and five patients undergo operations daily,” he added.

Dr Rana Altaf said the expansion of the institute was in the pipeline at an estimated amount of Rs 1579.980 million on an area of 24 kanal in near future.
