Tribal region’s woes

Khan Zeb Burki

Monday, July 16, 2012 - Post 9/11 regional scenario has turned tribal region of Pakistan into the hell of terror where peace has become a dream. The toppling of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan by the NATO and ISAF forces gave way to emergence of the Taliban groups in Waziristan and other bordering regions. The counter measures in shape of military operations since 2002 and the so-called preemptive strikes of pilotless US drones since 2004 have jointly compelled people of the region to live hopelessly. Their culture, language, economy and social life have pushed them to the crises of identity. On one hand, militancy and military have affected their lives, while on the other, they, especially the Mehsud and Burki tribes of Waziristan, are losing their identity. The scenic area of Kaniguram with a unique tribal and linguistic history is at the verge of losing its identity.

In the heart of South Waziristan in Mehsud area, Kaniguram is densely populated town of FATA. But ongoing military operations in the area have deserted the beautiful scenic town of Kaniguram. More than 100,000 IDPs of Kaniguram are holding iron keys to open their locked door. But it is unfortunate for those who do not have any knowledge about the conditions of their homes. The received pictures of the area depict the destroyed homes where silence is reigning now.

Destruction is easier than construction. Therefore, it was easy to bomb a house during operation without considering rebuilding expenses as a brick cost 20-25 rupees in the region. Keeping in view the above discussion, the government should increase the assistance cost of rehabilitation from 25000 to 200,000 minimum, and provide facilities of life to IDPs in displaced areas and in their hometowns after their return. The preservation of culture, language and identity of the people of Kaniguram will only be possible, if they are allowed to go back to their hometown while providing them with all living facilities. Accordingly, this historic and scenic area will become a hub of tourist activities.
