Mortar attack kills four in Khyber Agency

Monday, July 16, 2012 - Peshawar—A mortar shell landing at a house in the Khyber Agency Sunday early morning killed four of a family including three kids. Besides, two other members of the family sustained serious injuries.

There were conflicting reports as to weither the mortar was fired by the militants or the projectile came from the security forces but missed its target and hit the civilian population.

Reports reaching here said a mortar shell landed at the house of one Dolat Mir in Shekhaan village situated the converge of Tehsil Bara of Khyber Agency and provincial metropolis Peshawar Sunday morning raising at least two rooms of the house to ground.

The tragic incident ultimately resulted in killing of Dolat Mir’s wife and his three kids including two minor girls aged between one to three years. His slain son was aged 10 years. Besides two closed relatives of the tribesman Dolat Khan also sustained serious wounds.

“The mortar shell landing at the house of a tribesman led to killing of four of a family and injuries to two others as the victims of the mortar shell were shifted to a private hospital where four were pronounced dead while injured were admitted for treatment”.

An official of the political administration said adding the victims were buried under the debris of the collapsed rooms and then dead bodies and the injured were retrieved by the locals of the area.

While the Khyber Agency continued to be plagued by the insurgency for the last many years and security forces have been conducting operation in the region since long, a number of civilians have been killed and wounded by the landing of mortar shells.
