Plight of doctors

Dr Irfan Sarwar

Saturday, June 30, 2012 - I being a doctor wish to let you know the bitter realities which are being faced by doctors who are working in PRSP in Punjab and PPHI in rest of the provinces. Doctors are not given due respect by staff of DSUs because most of appointees in DSUs are locals of that area. DSM as well as Monitoring Executives consider doctors more a less educated than themselves and they talk to all doctors in bitter tone. Secondly, the doctors at BHUs are under threats of locals of the area. Very often, doctors are being humiliated by even uneducated persons. Most important thing is residency of a doctor.

In almost all BHUs the doctor’s house is very old, not renovated since long and devoid of all facilities where doctor cannot accommodate himself and his family. In such gruesome conditions doctors go to offer their services for the betterment of the people of rural area. Moreover, dispenser, LHV, nutritionist, watchman and even peon do not give ear to doctor’s orders. I request you for the sake of God to save doctors from unbearable humiliation. Following are some suggestions to ameliorate the general conditions of PRSP and PPHI.

Interview of a doctor must be conducted on the day when he visits DSU for appointment by any doctor, not by DSM. If possible, DSM must be a doctor not a bureaucrat because bureaucrats are bit arrogant in their dealings. Doctor should be given at least a house with all facilities, no matter how old it is. Monitoring Executive should be a doctor. DSM should be instructed to behave with doctors in an amicable style. There should not be any involvement of feuds in the matters of BHU. All the staff of BHU ought to be ordered to treat doctor nicely as most of the doctors are not locals. The doctor should be given authority to stop the salary of any staff member when he/she is not performing his/her duty diligently. Salary of doctor must be given on the 1st of every month.

Cook for doctor must be appointed in every BHU. More honestly, health department and these projects are given billions of rupees to facilitate doctors along with provision of medicines but health department officers and bureaucrats only line their pocket.
