FBR takes more taxpayer friendly initiatives
Since taking over the reign of the FBR, Mumtaz Haider Rizvi having rich and varied experience in all branches of this premier institution of Pakistan, has taken a number of taxpayers friendly initiatives. In our view his approach to tax payers has been rewarding because the revenue collection is increasing rapidly. After the inauguration of the system, first batch of facilitation e-mails were sent to more than one thousand taxpayers which were increased to two lakh tax payers in twenty four hours whose e-mails were registered with the FBR. The system aims to remind the taxpayers of upcoming deadlines on tax payments, changes in taxation law and procedures and other useful information for helping them in their tax matters. It is because of initiatives like this that the FBR’s tax collection this year is according to the target and there could be further increase if the process of reforms continues. We may however point out that there are many people who avoid payment of their due taxes and as a result the national economy is suffering. The tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio in Pakistan was around 10% in 2009 as compared to an average of 20% in other developing countries and this needs to be enhanced to meet our needs for socio economic development instead of looking for foreign loans. It is satisfying that Mumtaz Haider Rizvi has assured that existing taxpayers would not be further burdened and that FBR had taken innumerable measures to attain the revenue goal. Perhaps it may be appropriate if the leadership of the private sector should also be associated and they are asked to give their inputs so that a more hustle free and tax payers friendly system is evolved.
