Green tea ‘may block lung cancer’

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 - Islamabad—Smokers and non-smokers, people who do not drink green tea are more than five times as likely to get lung cancer than those who drink at least one cup of green tea a day. Drinking green tea may offer some protection against lung cancer as it is the polyphones in green tea that may make it beneficial, BBC health reported.

Researchers from medical university, Taiwan studied smokers and non- smokers who drink at least a cup a day cut their lung cancer risk significantly. Protection is greatest for people carrying certain genes and it was found out that particulal beverages have anti-cancer powers. Green tea is made from the dried leaves of the Asian plant Camellia sinesis and is drunk widely across Asia.

The rates of many cancers are much lower in Asia than other parts of the world, which has led some to link the two.
