Ten long years..!

Robert Clements

Wednesday, March 07, 2012 - As I hear accolades bestowed on Narendra Modi, about the progressive changes he’s made for his state, his businessman style of functioning, his ability to make snap decisions, I hear in the background the horrific, pathetic wailing of a thousand voices. The cries of defenseless women as husbands, no longer, protectors, defenders, guardians and bodyguards, are punched, lanced and burnt, their wails get louder, and shrieks like piercing whistles slice the air as they feel themselves violently dragged like some war trophy and used like harlots by the mob, and when they are done, burnt to cinders, where their wails grow into deafening silence.

A silence that has enveloped our nation for ten long years, as we watch this bearded man, who sponsored such repulsive violence and dastardly acts, get away with it. But then Hitler for a time, got away also, didn’t he? Hitler got the whole of Germany behind him, well almost the whole, as he went about with a vengeance, annihilating the Semitic innocents in his country.

A few years ago, while traveling through Germany, I looked at the people, friendly and caring, and wondered how such good men and women carried out such horrible massacre: Six million killed! Not soldiers, not just men, but women, toddlers, babies, thrown into gas chambers and snuffed out.

The whole of the Second World War was the time Hitler got away. Ten years is a long time for our man to have got away. “So Mr Chief Minister how is the state of affairs in your state?” “Tatas have come, so also Mahindras. We are getting the whole business community of India investing in our state! See how I have changed things!” “Businessmen sir, have no scruples! They go where they can make money. But what have you done for the people?” “Ask the majority!”

“One can always please the majority sir! But a good leader is one who looks after the least and smallest of his people! Anyone can look after the majority, because the majority can well, look after themselves!” Ten long years, in which for a while he was even projected a Prime Minister candidate! Can you imagine him as one? “Sir, the opposition parties are against the bill you tabled this morning!” “Withdraw their armed guards. Take away their security.” “But sir, some of them have death threats against them. They might be killed!” “We control the police don’t we? They have to learn a lesson!”

If my column sounds harsh today, it is just to warn you my readers that said patterns reveal a man. Don’t be fooled because industrial houses are shifting to his state. Germany became a powerful industrial nation also during the genocide. But if some day he looks at you in the face and says, “Yes, in my weakness I made a mistake, I am a changed man now!” Then and only then think of giving him a second chance…in some state near Siberia..!
