A two-faced opposition..!

Robert Clements

Friday, December 23, 2011 - The same members of the opposition who jumped onto the Anna Hazare stage a few days ago, saw they were on TV, made themselves heard by the public, waved the flag vigorously with Kiran Bedi and made us feel they support the anti-corruption bill, have now slunk back to their closed door meetings expressing reservations over the Bill.

“Sir,” I said to an opposition member, “there is something peculiar happening to you. You have grown two faces!” “Yes, yes one for the public, one for closed door pre-Lokpal bill meetings. Are you from the public, if so come to the right side!” “Right side sir?”

“Yes, yes, the right side is what I tell the public, what they want to hear: I feel that such a bill is needed for the country! That the people have had enough and that every politician and public servant must be accountable!” “That is indeed a bold stand sir!” “B..b..but what are you doing?” “I am going to the left side of you sir! Sir what do you feel about the Lokpal Bill?”

“Throw it on the ground! Stamp on it! It is political suicide to pass such a bill. It will put all of us behind bars! Today we are in the opposition but when we win the next elections such a bill will see we don’t make any money! We will be paupers!” “So what do you feel should be done with the bill?” “What are you doing?”

“Moving to your right side sir!” “Ah the Lokpal Bill; just what the nation needs. If Gandhiji had been here he would have been so happy to see our nation, his nation, the nation he won freedom for, now pushing a bill that will give us not freedom from the British, but a greater freedom, a truer freedom, freedom from corruption! Oh what a happy Mahatma he would have been. A bill of integrity, won through non-violence! Ww.what are you doing?” “Moving to your left side sir!” “Down with the bill!” “What sir?” “Throw it into the kachra dabba!” “Sir?”

“Burn it, and throw the ashes into the sea! What are you doing?” “Standing in the middle sir. Between your two faces Mr Politician! Both your faces are talking, shouting, whispering, screaming!” “Why are you standing in the middle?” “To show the nation what you are sir, to reveal to the people of India both your faces, two masks that fool the people!” “Do not stand in the middle, stand either to the left or on my right!” “There is no middle Mr Opposition Politician, because there is no real you..!”
