An unsung deed

Sunday, November 06, 2011 - These days after Pakistan was elected UN SC Member, Pakistan was being congratulated . I thought of two of us Zafrul Islam and me who were sent out as Special Envoys to muster support for Pakistan’s SC Membership in 1982 , he to the French speaking and me to English Speaking Africa just in time for the OAU Annual Session, . At that time Africa had the largest bloc of votes in the UN about 52 UN members out of about 180 members in all. Africa votes en bloc after taking decision about such items on UN Agenda at the African Union ( then called OAU) Annual meeting. Pakistan was elected to UNSC. No one “congratulated us, nor this fact ever found mention in the official records. Both of us had been ambassadors in Nigeria, the “giant” of Africa and Egypt. Good, we were paid government servants So what.? Yeah !!
