A depressed people..!

Friday, August 05, 2011 - Today’s newspaper says we are the world’s most depressed people, and that 36 percent of our people have suffered at one time or other or are still suffering from a Major Depressive Episode! In case there are some among you who will point out that sadness comes from poverty, let me tell you that we are not so poor anymore and also that a lot of this depression isn’t happening among the economically backward but among those who are doing well. So why should you feel depressed when you have everything? You were sad riding a scooter or cycle, you saw the faces of those who had a car and thought they looked happy and so you made enough money to buy one, and now find that you are still feeling sad and despondent. A factor faced by most depressed people are mood swings: You feel sad and suddenly find yourself feeling happy, absolutely ecstatic, and then the mood dips, down, down, down, till you touch rock bottom.

You get the feeling you are a boat tossed about, buffeted by waves, helpless as storm and calm play a game with you, around you. Many years ago, I visited the Niagara, and watched in awe as the waters of the St Lawrence River flowed into the chasm below. Just before they hit the falls, the river became one angry, violent mass of fury rushing to get thrown down into the waterfall. But what struck me were signs along the river, asking, “Do you have an anchor?”

Yes, do you have an anchor? I’m sure you’ve all either been to the Niagara Falls or seen pictures of it. You all know how dangerous the currents are and that nothing can save you from a death ride down to the bottom, unless, yes, unless you have an anchor. That, is what we need today to tackle this new disease, an anchor. What is the anchor we need? Well for a start Absolute principles; today we have become a nation of liars, because we have drifted far from the truth, so absolute principles are required first.

New values that have become accepted lately need to be thrown out, and old ones, Godlike, God given and God driven need to return. Caring and sharing, your strength and your wealth with others, helps you stay afloat. Humility, yes being humble is what we need to be. Opening a prayer line to God above is a must, there’s no other way. Be gentle, be compassionate. There’s the ingredients of an anchor for you, let’s work at bringing down our depression and becoming a nation of happy people..!
