Thursday, July 21, 2011 - “The Income Tax department will soon depute it’s ‘dynamic officers’ to address school students to make them aware of the benefits of paying tax..” Times of India, 12th July

The dynamic officer who was to address the students, arrived at the assembly hall of the local school and was ushered in by the principal to talk to the waiting students: “Now why should we pay tax children?” he asked the assembled students. “So that your wife can drive around in a Mercedes sir?” asked a student in the first row. “What?” asked the stunned officer. “Or is it that your father lives in a palace in your native place and your brother has now been financed into his third business?” said the same boy. “This is not the reason I came to address you!” said the shocked officer. “This is not the reason I came to tell you to pay your taxes!”

“Or should we pay taxes so that ninety nine percent of the tax money goes to government officers instead of going to the poor or for project they are meant to be used for sir?” asked the same boy. “You have got it all wrong,” said the officer. “Have I sir? Maybe you should talk about what happens when we don’t pay taxes?” “Yes, yes, that is a very good subject,” said the relieved officer. “Children do you know what happens if you don’t pay taxes?”

“We will have to visit you sir?” “Yes!” said the relieved officer. “With a briefcase full of thousand rupee notes sir?” “Wait, wait, I think you are getting it all wrong again?” “Or do you take it in kind?” “Kind?” “Well you know, dinners at the Taj, lunches at another five star?” “This is getting ridiculous,” said the ‘dynamic’ official looking at the principal, “I think you will have to tell this boy to shut up!” “Why don’t you do that!” said the principal.

“You want me to tell him to shut up?” “Well if he’s disturbing you and you don’t mind facing his father after you tell him to shut up, it’s okay with me.” “Why should I be scared of facing his father? I am an officer; I can do much harm to his father! What is you father?” asked the officer to the student.

“Your boss sir!” said the student, as he sat down, “That’s why I know so much about why we should pay our taxes, because my father talks quite often about you, and how you benefit when others pay taxes..!”
