Concrete dreams..!

Saturday, July 16, 2011 - Many of us wander through life without knowing what we want from it. It’s like going on a long journey without a map, and not knowing where you’re headed to. “What do you want out of life?” I ask youngsters, and they look shyly at me, and even reply, “Whatever life gives me!”

Hey, you expect life to give you something, then you need a plan my friend. Ever heard of dreaming in concrete? Yes, not dreams of mud, sand or clay that may get washed away, or swept away by the first wave of disappointment but dreams of concrete that will stand the rough journey of life. Here’s a person who dreamt that way: There was once a handsome prince, who unfortunately was born with a bent back, and this was a great handicap to the talented youngster.

The doctors who were consulted informed the king, his father that the malfunction of the prince’s bones was reversible with a certain set of exercises. But it would take time and would need a lot of perseverance and discipline. The young prince decided to go about it with zeal, but before doing so he called in the best sculptor in the country and commissioned him to prepare a statue of himself with one difference. The statue should show him with a …..straight back! When the statue was ready, he solemnly installed it in his garden and gazed at it as he went about his somewhat painful exercises everyday. His heart would beat faster as he visualized himself looking just like the figure in concrete.

Some months went by. Very often he heard jokes about the statue he had got installed in his garden and a newspaper even drew a cartoon of a concrete prince sitting on the thrown and the real prince standing behind a pillar in the palace hiding. But strangely it didn’t bother the prince.

One day a friend of his who had come into the garden with him said, “Prince you are standing straight like the statue!” And it was true; the prince’s back had started straightening up. He realized his repeated gazing at the statue had egged him on and his back was nearly okay.

He didn’t stop, he carried on till he stood, tall, straight and erect, a dashing, handsome man, but who with his looks had built inside perseverance and persistence; stuff which made him formidable in character. What had kept him going was his dream in stone. Remember you also like the prince can rise tall over desert, jungle, swamp or marshland if you dare dream in concrete..! Start now.
