Canal-side tree plantation to be transferred to irrigation deptt

Lahore—The Punjab government has decided to transfer the canal-side tree plantation work from the Punjab Forests Department to the Punjab Irrigation Department and the process will be completed at the earliest.
This was informed at a briefing session held at Civil Secretariat, Lahore, on Wednesday. Additional Chief Secretary Punjab Shamail Ahmad Khawaja presided over the briefing session, a handout said.
A detailed briefing regarding transition process of plantation on the both sides of 3,993 canal miles long link canals and main arteries of provincial canals along with 19,293 canal miles long distributaries and miners was presented to the additional chief secretary Punjab with the latest progress report. It may be mentioned that one canal mile is equivalent to five thousand feet.
Secretary Forests Punjab Capt (R) Jehanzeb Khan, Secretary Irrigation Capt (R) Saif Anjum, Secretary Regulations Dr Saleh Tahir and Additional Secretary (Operations) Punjab Irrigation Department participated in the meeting.
Additional Chief Secretary Punjab Shamail Ahmed Khawaja expressed the hope that this significant step of the Punjab government will help control environmental pollution and weather changes in the province.
He directed to prepare a detailed operational plan for canal-side tree plantation in the next meeting to be held after a week.
