30 killed, 66 injured as two buses collide


R Y Khan—At least 30 people including the two drivers were killed and over 66 injured when two buses collided with each other on Khanpur Road in Rahim Yar Khan district near Sahja on Monday morning. The incident occurred when a speeding passenger bus collided head-on with another bus coming from the opposite direction near Dhareeja railway crossing in Khanpur. One ill-fated bus was travelling from Gujrat to Karachi while the other bus was bound for Lahore from the port city of Karachi. Rescue sources had to cut the debris to take out survivors and the dead. The injured were shifted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, where emergency was declared. Rescue teams arrived at the scene and shifted the bodies and injured persons to Tehsil Headquarter hospital in Khanpur and Sheikh Zaid Hospital in Rahimyar Khan. Some of the injured were reportedly in critical condition. According to doctors, some bodies are beyond recognition. Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the accident and directed the authorities to provide best medical facilities to the injured. DCO Zafar Iqbal said the public has been requested to donate blood for the injured.—INP
