Hockey squad for London Olympic announced

Peshawar—Chairman Selection Committee Hanif Khan and chief coach Akhter Rasool have announced an 18-member hockey team for the London Olympics with penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas and Waqas Shareef were named as Captain and Vice Captain respectively. Besides 18-member hockey team, two athletes, two swimmers and a shooter would also participate in Games schedule from July 27 to August 11, 2012.

Tennis: Azarenka reclaims world number one spot

Paris—Belarussian Victoria Azarenka returned to the world number one spot in the latest rankings released on Monday thanks to American Serena Williams’ victory over Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska in the Radwanska needed to win Saturday’s final to take the world number one ranking but had to settle for a move up from third to second.

Choi wins US Women’s Open Golf

Kohler (Wis.)—Na Yeon Choi was disappointed that her parents weren’t there on Sunday to celebrate her U.S. Women’s Open victory. But having her parents home in South Korea instead of in the gallery at Blackwolf Run might be one of the reasons why Choi has matured into a player with the poise to survive a potential meltdown on the back nine and hold on to win her first career major. When Choi joined the LPGA Tour in 2008, her parents came along to help her adjust to life in a new country. In 2009, Choi decided she needed to be on her own to mature - so she sent them home.

Rain washes out Pak-Sri Lanka Test

Pallekele—Bad weather washed out the entire second day’s play in the third and final Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Monday. The entire field at the Pallekele International Stadium was covered as incessant rain since early morning, the heaviest in the region in the last two months, kept the players indoors. Umpires Steve Davis and Simon Taufel waited till 3:00 pm (0930 GMT) before they abandoned play for the day when the weather showed no signs of clearing.
