Electricity from Thar coal to end power crisis: Samar

Sialkot—Member Science and Technology Planning Commission of Pakistan Dr Samar Mubarkmand has said that the country was rich in coal reserves, the fourth largest in the world with 175 million tones of the ore. Addressing the presidents of chambers of commerce and industry at SCCI here, he said, “We can produce gas and energy through underground coal gasification to meet the industrial and domestic needs.”

Country faces threat to $1b annual exports to EU

Islamabad—Pakistan may not avail the full benefits of duty free exports to European Union (EU) under Generalized System of Preferences (GPS) plus scheme and faces a threat of losing $ 1 billion annual export to the latter due to deteriorating energy crisis. This was said by President Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) Dr Murtaza Mughal in a statement issued here on Sunday.

ADB announces $1.2b in long-term support for Afghans

Tokyo—At today’s Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) reiterated its commitment to the country’s long-term development, including a $1.2 billion indicative assistance program through 2016. “The Asian Development Bank has successfully worked with the Government of Afghanistan for more than a decade on a range of projects that have directly benefited millions of the country’s people,” ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda said at the conference. “We are firmly committed to staying engaged in Afghanistan’s development efforts.”

NFEH announces 9th AEEA for 73 companies

Karachi—National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH) announced results of 9th Annual Environment Excellence Awards (AEEA) for best environment performance of 2011-12. This was announced by President NFEH M. Naeem Qureshi during the final meeting of jury. Naeem Qureshi said the award has been instituted to recognize and promote the organizations which make an outstanding contribution to sustainable development. They aim to highlight policies, practices, processes and products from all sectors of business in the country, which help achieve economic and social development without harming the environment and natural resources.

Sialkot industrial sector badly hit by power outages

Sialkot—Prolonged power outage was adversely hitting the industrial sector and trade activities of this export-oriented city and hub of cottage industry of the country resultantly the productivity and trading had become standstill. Due to 18 to 20 hours load shedding in rural parts and 12-16 hours in urban are had created multifarious problems and people are confronting with awful problems day and night besides they are facing serious hardship in getting drinking water owing to non-functioning of tube-wells.

Development of 3G broadband networks workshop from today

A global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, Huawei will organize the first-ever 3G series five-day workshop till July 13 where top telecom operators from across the country are expected to attend in order to support the future development of 3G broadband networks.

Govt wants private sector to play leading role in economy

Islamabad—Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Sunday said private sector is the engine of growth and he would like to see it play a leading role in the economy. The Prime Minister said this while talking to the office bearers of Islamabad Chambers of Commerce and Industry who called on him at Prime Minister House here. He said government only gives policy to create an enabling environment for the economy within the imperatives of social justice.

British banks are ‘throttling recovery’ : Cable

London—Banks are “throttling” the recovery of Britain’s economy by failing to lend small firms desperate for loans, Business Secretary Vince Cable said on Sunday. Cable, a long-term critic of Britain’s large banks, said the government needed to focus on ensuring a 100 billion pound ($155 billion) credit boost announced in June reached companies that needed loans to fund their expansion.
