Euro 2012: Dutch on brink, Varela revives Portugal hopes

Kharkiv—Holland were left on the verge of exiting Euro 2012 at the group stage on Wednesday just two years after they looked set for a golden era when they reached the World Cup final. Two goals by German striker Mario Gomez proved enough as the Euro 2008 finalists saw off the Dutch 2-1 and left them pointless after two games of Group B. The Dutch will have to beat Portugal in their final group game.

South Africa name unchanged squad for England series

Johannesburg—South Africa have kept faith with a winning formula by naming an unchanged squad for the three-Test series in England starting next month, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Wednesday. The 15-man squad is identical to the touring side that beat New Zealand 1-0 in a three-Test series in March The Proteas are currently ranked number two in the world behind England and convener of selectors Andrew Hudson believes consistency and depth of squad have been the key ingredients to the team’s success.

SLC announces reserve days for Pakistan ODIs

Colombo—Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has made a provision for reserve days for the two remaining ODIs against Pakistan in Colombo. Pakistan made the request after the third ODI on Wednesday was washed out. The matches are scheduled for Saturday and Monday and rain is forecast for both days. The five-match series stands at 1-1.

Australia want to master all forms of game: Clarke

Sydney—Australia’s limited-overs tour of England and Ireland represents the start of a two-year campaign to make them the top nation in all three forms of the game, captain Michael Clarke said Thursday. Australia head the one-day ratings, but are third in the Test standings and sixth in the T20 format. “We’ve been the number one ODI team in the world for a while now but we need to continue to raise the bar,” Clarke said before the one-day international squad’s departure on Thursday.

Mahut ends Murray’s reign at Queen’s

London—Andy Roddick refused to offer any excuses after being sent packing in the first round of the French Open with a 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-2 defeat against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut on Sunday. The 26th-seeded Roddick, who has never gone past the third round of the Paris grand slam in 10 attempts, could not even blame his exit on being outfoxed by a clay court specialist. “It’s not his favourite surface either,” Roddick admitted during a news conference.
