Separate Ministry for disabled persons suggested

Islamabad—A nation with over 10 per cent disabled population urgently requires proper legislation to secure the rights of persons with disabilities. The pressing demand for a separate ministry to deal with disability issues in Pakistan came forward at a gathering ‘An Evening with Persons with Disabilities’ held at National Institute of Special Education, Islamabad. The meeting arranged by Initiative for Raising Awareness, Development and Assimilation of the Handicapped (IRADAH) in collaboration with Telenor Pakistan was attended by a large number of people with disabilities.

MIH holds seminar on Epilepsy Eminent specialist delivers talk

Islamabad—Eminent specialist Dr Irfan Malik from Kings Hospital London delivered an awareness talk at the Maroof International Hospital (MIH) on Tuesday on causes, symptoms and possible treatment of Epilepsy. He is currently visiting MIH on an invitation by the Chairman of the Hospital, Chaudhry Naseer Ahmed. Dr.Irfan Malik in his talk also expressed his expert views on creating comfortable and secure atmosphere for patients of Epilepsy. After his awareness lecture, the doctor sought questions from the audience and answered them to the satisfaction of the questioners.

Clay pots exhibition attracts craft lovers

Islamabad—The exhibition of rare clay pots by Sheherezade Alam is continued here at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) till June 24 featuring the artistic skills that bring unique style in crafts. Some 150 exquisite pottery items are serving the craft lovers as an attraction through depiction of aesthetic tradition in the visual impact of the brilliant ceramics. The show entitled “I am vessel, I am the vessel maker, I am the clay of the vessel” has been arranged by the National Art Gallery of PNCA in collaboration with Ministry of National Heritage and Integration.

Cutting calories ‘may help keep your heart young‘

PEOPLE who restrict their calorie intake in an effort to live longer have hearts that function more like those in people who are 20 years younger, a new study has revealed. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have found that a key measure of the heart’s ability to adapt to physical activity, stress, sleep and other factors that influence the rate at which the heart pumps blood, doesn’t decline nearly as rapidly in people who have significantly restricted their caloric intake for an average of seven years.

Awards for noted minority members

Islamabad—Ministry of National Harmony has proposed restoration of cultural awards for those minority members of society who have done some remarkable job in a particular field of life. According to a summary prepared by the ministry whose copy is with Pakistan Observer, some 14 persons would be given cash awards amounting to Rs50,000 each for their contribution in the development and service to the country.

Hike in fares Commuters in twin cities perturbed

Islamabad—People of twin cities have rejected hike in local transport fares on directive of the Punjab government, while the transporters of twin cities have started fleecing commuters. According to new fare list issued by the Punjab government in which stop to stop fare was increased by Rs3 to Rs15 while long distance by Rs7 to Rs10, resultantly quarrels were taking place on daily basis among the passengers and transporters.

Sri Lankan Navy Commander to hold talks with Admiral Sandila

Islamabad—Commander of Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral DWAS Dissanayake will hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart for future collaboration between both the navies. Vice Admiral Dissanayake is currently on an official visit along with a four-member delegation. The visit is being undertaken on the invitation extended by Chief of Naval Staff Pakistan Admiral Mohammad Asif Sandila.

PBC condemns life threats to Asma Jehangir

Islamabad—Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed its utmost concern and strongly condemned the life threats to Ms Asma Jehangir, former President of Supreme Court Bar Association. In a resolution adopted by the Executive Committee here Tuesday, the PBC said it is shameful that a conspiracy to assassinate Asma Jehangir is reported to have been hatched by the establishment and undemocratic forces.
