Liberals need toleranceAbdullah Ansari
In Pakistani media, Liberals are more intolerant than their conservative counterparts. This claim sounds odd because tolerance is something that is always championed by liberals. Even, they always accuse conservatives of being intolerant and give them lecture for free about tolerance and patience.
However, a closer look at the writing and speeches of liberals reveal the fact that they are not ready to accept anyone with other ideas than liberalism. If anyone doesn’t agree to liberal ideas, they will start labeling him as “terrorist”, “Zia left-overs”, “narrow minded”, etc. This attitude of liberals also reflects in comments about any column related to Islam and/or Eastern values. For example, I remember those days when a video about Swat was televised all day long, liberals were shouting at the top of their lungs against Islam and presenting the whole event as it was done according to Islamic teachings. After few months, when it was proved that the video was fake and it was not even shot in Swat, these liberals didn’t had enough moral courage to say sorry for all the havoc they produced. Same attitude can also be witnessed regarding Drone attacks, especially if you read through comments posted by liberal extremists. It seems that they are quite happy with killings of people there whereas same people will waste not a second to come out at Press club, with all placards and stuff for unauthentic reports about forced marriages. I was really surprised to notice that behavior when some girls, who were supposedly forced to change their religion and were married to Muslims, denied all this crap and confessed that they changed their religion out of their free will. It was also endorsed by judiciary. Even all this was not enough to make liberals realize that they should show tolerance and patience for judiciary, at least. —Karachi |
