Beijing—Pakistan and China Wednesday signed three Memorandum of understanding covering supply of water from Tarbela to Islamabad, establishment of Special Economic Zone in the proposed new city Zulfikarabad in Sindh and the building of 6,000 flats in I-15 sector Islamabad on private public partnership basis and an agreement for the de-silting of canals and barrages in Sindh.

Law to take its course if son found guilty: CJ Islamabad—The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned till today (Thursday) the hearing of a suo motu notice taken on allegations that Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, had been doled out Rs300 to 400 million by property tycoon Malik Riaz. A three-member Bench headed by the chief justice heard the case. The bench also includes Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif. The CJ asked the TV anchorpersons to bring the material on the next hearing on which they conducted their programmes.

US to continue attacks on Qaeda in Pak Panetta confirms killing of al-Libi

New Delhi—Pentagon Chief Leon Panetta said Wednesday that the US would continue to attack al Qaeda in Pakistan following the killing of the group’s number two Abu Yahya al-Libi. “We have made it very clear that we are going to continue to defend ourselves,” Secretary of Defence Panetta said when asked about drone strikes in Pakistan during a trip to India.

Gilani to attend UN Conference on Environment in Brazil

Islamabad—Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani will leave here on June 19 to attend United Nations Conference on Sustainable Developed with reference to environmental changes being held in Brazil from June 20 to 22. Five Ministers including Rana Farooq Ahmed Saeed Khan, Minister for Climate Change along with environmental experts will accompany the Prime Minister to make an impressive presence in the conference. About 120 Heads of States and Governments will attend this important event titled RIO-20.

Countrywide shutdown by CNG stations

Karachi/Lahore —On call of All Pakistan CNG Association, gas filling stations remained closed in almost all the major cities of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and urban Sindh to protest against increase in CNG rates. The commuters and motorists had to suffer a lot due to strike of CNG dealers. Earlier long queues of vehicles were witnessed in major cities on late Tuesday night after the CNG Association announced the strike. At some CNG stations, Rs 96.97 per kg was being charged; equal to price of one litre of petrol.

17 civilians dead in NATO airstrike in Afghanistan

Pul-I-Alam—A pre-dawn NATO airstrike killed 17 civilians, including women and children, in Afghanistan’s central Logar province, officials said on Wednesday. The air raid that caused the latest civilian casualties was conducted at 1:00 am in the Sajawand area on the periphery of Baraki Barak district, said the town’s administrative chief.Syed Wakil Agha said that coalition forces carried out the attack on a tribal elder Bashir Akhundzada’s residence.

Corps Commanders discuss proposed operation in NWA

Rawalpindi–The Corps Commanders Conference decided to fortify the security of Pak Afghan border and showed apprehensions over increasing miscreants’ attacks on army and civilians from a cross border.The Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani chaired the meeting , which took review of the proposed operation in North Waziristan Agency , however no final decision was taken. Corps Commander Peshawar Lt.Gen. Khalid Rabbani gave the briefing about security situation at the western border as well as North and South Waziristan.The Corps Commanders also talked about the missing persons as they were briefed on the issue by the ISI.
