Defending champion Li knocked out of French OpenParis—Defending champion Li Na of China crashed out of the French Open on Monday, losing a fourth round tie 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. Shvedova, the world number 142, will play either Varvara Lepchenko of the United States or fourth seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic for a place in the semi-finals. Li, the 30-year-old world number seven, was attempting to be the first French Open women’s champion to successfully defend the title since Justine Henin in 2007.Face bouncers with helmets on: GrahamBipin Dani from Mumbai The International Cricket Council (ICC) may have been proposing to increase in the number of permitted short pitched deliveries from one to two per over, but should (also) get involved in standardisation of helmets for the players, according to Graham Yallop, the former Australian left-handed batsman.
Yallop had made the history as the first Australian to wear helmet in the Test match (against West Indies in Barbados). He was one of the few Australian players to stand up to the express bowling of the opposition. Following a blow to the jaw in a tour match, he wore a helmet.
Afridi becomes first player to play 50 T20 matchesLahore—Star all-rounder Shahid Afridi became the first player to play 50 Twenty20 internationals and earn seven match awards in the format. He achieved this distinction during second T20 match against Sri Lanka on Sunday. Brendon McCullum of New Zealand is second in the list with 47 T20 matches while Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik is third with 41 matches.Pakistan retains Tanvir for Sri Lanka ODIsKarachi—Pakistan on Monday added Sohail Tanvir to the one-day squad against Sri Lanka after the left-arm paceman excelled in the Twenty20 series draw. The 27-year-old fast bowler failed to make the original one-day squad but was included at the request of team managers. Tanvir replaced opener Nasir Jamshed who suffered a finger injury before the tour began.ICC must ban Hambantota wicket for limited over gamesCommentsSalahuddin Haider COMMENTS or a write-up on the first of the two T-20 games against Sri Lanka was purposely avoided because it may have been treated as biased after Pakistan failed to reach a meagre total, but now that the series stands equalized, I am constrained to say that the Hambantota wicket was not suited to such type of games and needed to be banned for future contests. ICC as a regulatory body for international cricket, has to have a deep, deep look whether such wickets can be allowed for matches that are actually meant to provide entertainment to the people.
