Real Madrid clinch Spanish league title

Madrid—Real Madrid claimed their first Spanish title in four years, ending the reign of bitter rivals Barcelona to boot, as they beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 on Wednesday for what is their 32nd league crown. Gonzalo Higuain, Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the goals to give Jose Mourinho a record-breaking four titles in four different countries and the victory required with two games remaining. Mourinho’s first Spanish league title ended Barca’s run of three successive league titles in his second season at the club.

KUST win overall trophy in Athletic Meet

Peshawar—Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) clinched the overall trophy by securing 91 points in the Athletic Meet part of the Kohat Sports Festival organized under the aegis of District Sports Officer at Kohat Sports Complex ground on Thursday. DCO Kohat Shahid Ullah Khan was the chief guest on this occasion. DSO Salim Raza, DPO Kohat Mubarik Zaib, Director Sports KUST Wajid Ali and a large number of officials and players were also present.

A good hug to Asif: Haroon

The 30-year-old Pakistani pace bowler Mohammad Asif may have been serving a seven-year ban period (with two years suspended) for his alleged role in the spot-fixing, but has still few fans left in this world. “I have no problem in providing him a shelter at my house, near Peterborough”, his one time coach and close friend, Mohammad Haroon said over telephone from England. Asif has been granted visa to stay in England. It will enable him to appeal against the conviction.

Asif’s father says release ends pain

Sheikhupura—The father of former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Asif said his son’s release from prison Thursday had brought an end to six months of pain for his family and backed the paceman to return to the game. Asif, 29, was freed from jail in Britain after serving half of a 12-month sentence over a spot-fixing scandal and was taken by his friend Mohammad Haroon to his house in suburban London.

COAS Open Golf Championship starts

Rawalpindi—The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Open Golf Championship 2012 started here at Rawalpindi Golf Club on Thursday with 481 golfers participating from across the country in the four-day event. On the first day, the total no of participants were 146 under different categories including, Subsidiaries 97, Senior Amateurs 27, Juniors 8 and Veterans 14.
