Sharapova routs Azarenka to claim Stuttgart title

Germany—Maria Sharapova earned her first WTA title of the year on Sunday as she blasted her way past world number one Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the Stuttgart claycourt tournament. This was the 25-year-old Sharapova’s 25th title of her career, but her first in 2012 having lost three finals. It was also revenge for both this year’s Australian Open and Indian Wells defeats at the hands of Azarenka and having also been runner-up at the Miami tournament, when she lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets.

Olympic football tickets back on sale

London—London 2012 will put 1.4million tickets for the Olympic football tournament on sale Monday, organisers confirmed. Re-sales of unwanted tickets were suspended in January after problems with the Ticketmaster computer system, but the technology has been worked on and can now sell up to 250,000 tickets an hour.

Jibran moves to next round of Clay Court Tennis C’ship

Islamabad—Jibran-ul-Haq shocked 6th seed Sanaullah Khan to reach next round of 9th Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship here at PTF Complex, on Monday. Jibran beat Sanaullah by 2-1. Hameed-ul-Haq lost his match against Imran Shaukat. Hameed shown strong resistance in first set, however, could not play his natural game. Aqeel Khan, Yasir Khan, Asim Shafique and Ahmed Ch among others moved to next round without any noted resistance from their respective opponents.

Malignaggi wins WBA welterweight title

Donetsk (Ukraine)—American Paul Malignaggi stopped previously undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko in the ninth round Sunday to take the WBA welterweight title.The referee stepped in to halt the fight at 1:10 in the ninth after Malignaggi pounded the left side of Senchenko’s face until his eye closed.The 31-year-old Malignaggi, the former IBF junior welterweight champion, improved to 31-4 with his seventh career knockout. The 35-year-old Senchenko dropped to 32-1 in front of a sparse home crowd at Donbass Arena.

Real sight La Liga title, Barca hit seven

Spain—Real Madrid edged closer to their first league title in four years with a 3-0 win over Sevilla, but Barcelona ensured their celebrations were put on hold with a 7-0 mauling of Rayo Vallecano. Karim Benzema struck a second half brace after Cristiano Ronaldo had given Real the lead to beat Sevilla as the Madrid side took their record-breaking haul of league goals for the season to 112. Victory against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday will guarantee a first title since 2008 for Jose Mourinho’s team.
