Colombo—Muttiah
Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan spinner, has said
he may quit international cricket before the
2011 World Cup in the subcontinent. Murali, on
his fourth tour to India, his final overseas
tour, is struggling to come to terms with the
placid Indian pitches and a strong batting
line-up which has treated him harshly in the
series so far.
Port Elizabeth—James
Anderson wrecked South Africa’s batting order
with a career-best performance as England won
the fourth one-day international by seven
wickets at St George’s Park on Sunday. The fast
bowler took five wickets for 23 as South Africa
were bowled out for 119, their lowest total in a
one-day international in their own country.
Quebec
City—Unbeaten Lucian Bute knocked out Librado
Andrade in the fourth round here to retain his
International Boxing Federation super
middleweight world title. The Romanian-born Bute,
who has become a hero in his adopted Canada,
dropped the Mexican challenger for the first
time in the fourth with a short left to the chin
- sending a crowd of 16,000 into a frenzy.
London—America’s
chest-bumping Bryan brothers captured the ATP
World Tour Finals doubles crown Sunday — then
set their sights on becoming the greatest men’s
doubles pairing ever. US twins Bob and Mike
Bryan beat Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Israel’s
Andy Ram 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 at London’s O2 Arena for
their third season-ending championship crown,
having won the 2003 and 2004 titles.
New
York—Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500
for her U.S. Open tirade and could be suspended
from that tournament if she has another “major
offense” at any Grand Slam in the next two
years. Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock’s
ruling was released Monday, and said Williams
faces a “probationary period” at tennis’ four
major championships in 2010 and 2011.
