Murali may quit before 2011 World Cup

Colombo—Muttiah Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan spinner, has said he may quit international cricket before the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent. Murali, on his fourth tour to India, his final overseas tour, is struggling to come to terms with the placid Indian pitches and a strong batting line-up which has treated him harshly in the series so far.

England beat S Africa in fourth ODI

Port Elizabeth—James Anderson wrecked South Africa’s batting order with a career-best performance as England won the fourth one-day international by seven wickets at St George’s Park on Sunday. The fast bowler took five wickets for 23 as South Africa were bowled out for 119, their lowest total in a one-day international in their own country.

Bute KOs Andrade to keep IBF super middleweight belt

Quebec City—Unbeaten Lucian Bute knocked out Librado Andrade in the fourth round here to retain his International Boxing Federation super middleweight world title. The Romanian-born Bute, who has become a hero in his adopted Canada, dropped the Mexican challenger for the first time in the fourth with a short left to the chin - sending a crowd of 16,000 into a frenzy.

Bryan brothers win world doubles crown

London—America’s chest-bumping Bryan brothers captured the ATP World Tour Finals doubles crown Sunday — then set their sights on becoming the greatest men’s doubles pairing ever. US twins Bob and Mike Bryan beat Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Israel’s Andy Ram 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 at London’s O2 Arena for their third season-ending championship crown, having won the 2003 and 2004 titles.

Williams fined record $82,500 for US Open tirade

New York—Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500 for her U.S. Open tirade and could be suspended from that tournament if she has another “major offense” at any Grand Slam in the next two years. Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock’s ruling was released Monday, and said Williams faces a “probationary period” at tennis’ four major championships in 2010 and 2011.
