Mixed reaction on Balochistan package

Ghulam Tahir

Quetta—The beginning to end the decades old sense of deprivation of Balochistan announced by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has been received with mix reactions by the intelligentsia of Balochistan. Some called it one step forward while others maintained it was two steps backward for Balochistan.

The announcement of Prime Minister on the floor of the House regarding socio-economic development as crash programme and payment of Rs. 120 billion as share of various taxes on Sui gas for the past several decades is welcome step.

The main grievances and lack of confidence in such promises by the people relate to creditability of the federal government which is at present at the lowest ebb. In the past number of such assurance were given by the authorities at the helm of affairs but all vanish in the air.

The political observers maintained that the real issues are adherence to tribal convention and traditions, dissolution of devolution system and restore the traditional system of governance in Balochistan.

They pointed out that the introduction of devolution system is detrimental and counter productive of the maintenance of law and order and the poor law and order in the country oozed out because of this system as the entire nation is victim run by the novice.
