Balochistan package

Hamid Rajput

In recent years Balochistan has have witnessed an unprecedented wave of terrorism in the shape of target killings particularly of non-Baloch settler which continues to date. Target killing of Balochistan Education Minister Shafiq Ahmed Khan, Professor Khursheed Ansari of the University of Balochistan, Secretary Balochistan Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hamid Mehmood is really dreaded addition in the serene but underdeveloped Balochistan. The focus of menace is intellectual bank of province which is mainly comprised of non-Baloch segment of the society. There appears to be a deliberate intent of creating rift between locals and settlers. Target killings if continued unabated, may force many others to shift from Balochistan thereby retarding academic growth besides generating anti-Baloch feelings among settlers. The prevailing state of chaos, which was rekindled with the killing of Akbar Bugti and now has become a full-fledged national turmoil reinforced with India’s covert meddling and Brahamdakh’s steering of BLA from Afghanistan, therefore requires a pragmatic analysis of the situation. The recent announcement of 10 billion gas surcharge for Balochistan, proposal of recruitments of Balochi youth in the Army with the proportion of population of province and initiation of ‘Aghaz-e-Tahfuz Haqooq-e- Balochistan’ are all those efforts which show the sincerity on the part of the government to address the deprivation of province. However, a common Baloch is not aware of this because he is driven through his innocence by malicious intent of perpetrators of anti-state organization. —Via email

Requiem for late Gen Mujib

Jonaid Iqbal

Reference Zahid Malik’s obituary note on Gen Mujibur Rahman (R) published PO Nov. 23, 2009). Please allow me to add my tribute to him. I had the honour to work under the late Gen Mujibur Rahman. I recall that some time during 1981 he privately asked Mr. Zahid Malik for an insight paper on information related issues. He accepted two recommendations made in that paper. It was that fillip should be given to 14th August Independence day programmes. From then on we have witnessed a spurt on sale of national flags on outlets and street stands across the country. This continues even today. We also see even today, the item on weather in PTV news bulletins (which has since been adopted by all other news channels). These two facts should be regarded as Mujibur Rahman’s contribution to national integration and solidarity.

Some times during 1985 I was called in his office and asked to prepare a monograph containing English translation of pre selected poems from two legendary poets Allama Iqbal and Faiz Ahmad Faiz, for the SAARC summit cultural programme then scheduled at Dhaka. I did as asked to do, which he approved [and President Zia ul Haque, too, approved the volume] The point I wish to make is that the great poet Faiz was not entirely anathema to him (or by extension of this logic to the Zia regime) because the monograph was published as memorial volume for presentation to the SAARC Heads of State and Government at Dhaka. Logically if the poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz was not liked by Zia the English translation of his poems would not have been included in a document which was meant for presentation to important people at highest level. —Via email

Zardari’s address

Shahid Ali

Mr Zardari, President, Co-Chairman PPP-Z, addressed his party workers on Wednesday in Karachi from President House was a replica of Altaf Hussein’s’ live TV addresses from London. Coming out of from President House to PPP- workers, purely partisan in content, venomously worded. The political analysts must examine every word of speeches of all, made yesterday at Quiad Azam mausoleum. It would be worthwhile to say that principally Quidas’ resting place must not be made into a political arena by any party. Would SCP make it clear for the benefit of all and devastated poor nation. Should any ruler stay uninterruptedly even though it fails to establishes, rule of constitution ,rule of law ,justice, merit, fair play in Pakistan and ruins everything and should not extra constitutionalism in the name of self serving ‘democracy’ be done with permanently ? At the same time no government at any given time deride, dismiss or under play the constitutional proviso of impeachment, no confidence motion, mid term election for any desired constitutional change before the next stipulated election time frame. It may be borne in mind that the resistance or neglect to undertake constitutional means of change leads to undesired unconstitutional restorations. However, allow me now to say that under the circumstances, NRO being redundant, PPP-Z plus its ruling associates have lost high, medium, low moral ground to stay in power.—Dubai

Inflation figure

Shahbano Zeeanate Alam

Only Shaukat Tareen, his cronies or men under his influence believe in his inflation figure of 8.8 percent. Ninety percent or more, the worst suffering people of Pakistan do not believe him one bit due to the unprecedented, tyrannical, ruthless ‘mehangi’ unleashed by PPP-Z government and its coalition conglomerate. They consider it a joke and lie of the century.Let Shaukat Tareen compare prices of two to one year of past of daily essentials, ‘roti, kapra, house rents, ata, cheeni, dals, water, electricity, gaas, taleem, pani, sabzi, ghost, murgi, mutton, beef etcetcetc’ to current. These have gone up hamefully by hundreds of percent compounded by ruthless corruption, uncontrolled profiteering of big and small, virtually killing ninety percent poor of Pakistan. To come to self garlanding figures, the bankers can raise prices by two hundred percent in one quarter or year and in next quarter-year ,reduce it by ten percent to claim that inflation has come down to five percent. Look what is the disposable value of Rupee now. You have devastated it (especially middle-poor classes, especially the honest citizens). You reduced Rupee-dollar parity by RS 23 and claim to be keeping it stable. You forget yto tell that you have inflated loans, debt servicing costs, cost of imports by hundreds of billions dollars to damage economy. You did not devalue Rupee but depreciated its value to boost export. What did you achieve ?nly lower exports. Like the City banker,Shaukat Aziz,MR Tareen is another past master in fudging accounting-financial figures to trumpet his successes. They are economist by no experience and right though only for the corrupt elites, richest and enemies of poor. They must go.—Karachi

False US propaganda

Noor-ul-Ain

US says Mullah Omer is in Pakistan. Despite being technologically advanced and being capable of locating and observing anything on the ground the Obama administration is incapable of locating the right whereabouts of Mullah Omer. If they can easily get satellite pictures of Osama, why can’t of Omer? Why are the Americans blowing hot and cold rather than bringing proofs of Omer’s presence in Pakistan?

America has started propagating that Mullah Omer has escaped Waziristan and has taken refuge in Quetta. The other day he was located from Karachi. In the cases of Iraq and Afghanistan America claimed the presence of Osama and Zawahiri but both of these terrorists could not be located from these two countries. On the contrary America in a series of attacks killed millions of people in the two countries and ruined the infrastructure. So the accusations against Pakistan are a part and parcel of the old accusations against Iraq and Afghanistan. America is seriously planning another drama against Pakistan A few days back Kerry-Lugar bill was also opposed because America wanted authority for striking in Pakistan. For Pakistan it is very important to realize the significance of territorial integrity and sovereignty. There is a dire need to shape up Pakistan’s foreign policy and government needs to be very strict on this issue.—Via email
