India batsmen make merry in second Sri Lanka Test

Kanpur (India)—Opener Gautam Gambhir top-scored with 167 as India piled up a record 417-2 on the first day Tuesday of the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka. Gambhir shared 233 runs for the opening wicket with Virender Sehwag (131) and another 137 for the second with Rahul Dravid to help the home side score their highest Test total in a day’s play.

Ochoa edges Shin for LPGA’s top player award

Richmond (Texas)—Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin fought to the last hole for the LPGA’s top player award. By the slimmest of margins, Ochoa won and for the fourth straight year, too. She finished two strokes behind tournament winner Anna Nordqvist at the LPGA Tour Championship on Monday. The 22-year-old’s final-round 65 was good enough to beat Ochoa in the weather-shortened event at 13 under par on Monday.

National Games in Peshawar from next year

Peshawar—The opening ceremony of the 31st National Games would be held here at Qayyum Sports Complex on March 25, 2010, NWFP Minister for Sports Syed Aqil Shah told APP on Tuesday. Aqil Shah said this after attending the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pakistan Olympic Association chaired by its president Lt. Gen. (R) Arif Hassan. He said that the members of the executive council of the POA fully supported NWFP to organize the game.

Sami asks ICL to pay up his dues

London—Forgotten Pakistan pace bowler Muhammad Sami has expressed his frustration at the rebel Indian Cricket League ICL) for not clearing his dues. “I represented Lahore Bad shahs with great pride and gave all my best in every single match that I played for them. The Lahore Bad shahs were a huge attraction in the ICL and we played in front of big crowds wherever we went. We were a big draw in the competition and helped boost the crowds,” the 28- year- old quick bowler told the UK-based website PakPassion.net.
