Dunedin—It was no surprise that the day should
have begun eventfully. Mohammad Yousuf became
the first ICL player to captain a national side,
Vettori perhaps the first captain to call at the
toss in a Test being played in his country. Then
the start itself. Aamer must have grown up - if
that is possible for someone aged 17 - watching
Pakistani bowlers demolish New Zealand in New
Zealand with swinging yorkers, and he did the
same.
Kanpur
(India)—Opener Gautam Gambhir top-scored with
167 as India piled up a record 417-2 on the
first day Tuesday of the second cricket Test
against Sri Lanka. Gambhir shared 233 runs for
the opening wicket with Virender Sehwag (131)
and another 137 for the second with Rahul Dravid
to help the home side score their highest Test
total in a day’s play.
Richmond
(Texas)—Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin fought to
the last hole for the LPGA’s top player award.
By the slimmest of margins, Ochoa won and for
the fourth straight year, too. She finished two
strokes behind tournament winner Anna Nordqvist
at the LPGA Tour Championship on Monday. The
22-year-old’s final-round 65 was good enough to
beat Ochoa in the weather-shortened event at 13
under par on Monday.
Peshawar—The
opening ceremony of the 31st National Games
would be held here at Qayyum Sports Complex on
March 25, 2010, NWFP Minister for Sports Syed
Aqil Shah told APP on Tuesday. Aqil Shah said
this after attending the meeting of the
Executive Committee of the Pakistan Olympic
Association chaired by its president Lt. Gen.
(R) Arif Hassan. He said that the members of the
executive council of the POA fully supported
NWFP to organize the game.
London—Forgotten Pakistan pace
bowler Muhammad Sami has expressed his
frustration at the rebel Indian Cricket League
ICL) for not clearing his dues. “I represented
Lahore Bad shahs with great pride and gave all
my best in every single match that I played for
them. The Lahore Bad shahs were a huge
attraction in the ICL and we played in front of
big crowds wherever we went. We were a big draw
in the competition and helped boost the crowds,”
the 28- year- old quick bowler told the UK-based
website PakPassion.net.
