FIH’s trial of Team Referrals at Champions Trophy

Lahore—The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced the trial of an updated Video Umpire system at Men’s Champions Trophy being played from November 28 to December 5 in Melbourne. According to information made available here on Monday, under the current procedures, match umpires may refer decisions to the Video Umpire when they are not convinced that they have taken, or are able to take, the correct decision relating to the awarding or disallowing of goals.

Pakistan, New Zealand seek batting revival

New Zealand—New Zealand and Pakistan were casting an anxious eye at their fragile batting lineups Monday ahead of the first cricket Test here.The first of three Tests between New Zealand, the seventh ranked team in the world, and their sixth ranked rivals starts Tuesday as both teams try to overcome leadership upheavals. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has also taken over the role of head coach following the sudden departure of Andy Moles last month amid player criticism.

McPherson leads LPGA Tour Championship

Richmond (Texas)—The sky cleared and Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin were left with one day to settle their duel for LPGA Tour player of the year. Kristy McPherson took the lead at 8 under in fading sunlight at the LPGA Tour Championship on Sunday before the second round was suspended because of darkness. Shin was one stroke back with two holes to play in her second round, and Ochoa two back with one hole left.

Federer rallies to beat Verdasco at ATP finals

London—Roger Federer overcame an erratic forehand and Fernando Verdasco on Sunday, rallying to beat his Spanish opponent 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the round-robin stage of the ATP World Tour Finals. The top-ranked Federer was broken only once — in the opening game of the Group A match after double-faulting on the first point — but he never looked dominating until late in the second set when he converted his first break point to even the score at one set apiece.

Two new players included in National Sr team

Lahore—Pakistan senior hockey team announced for Champions Challenge-I, has two new faces in Umer Bhutta and Muhammad Rizwan who have replaced fatigued forwards Shafqat Rasool and Abbas Haider. “We have given rest to these players because they lack form and fitness and their place has been filled with two players of the junior team “,said Chief selector, Hassan Sardar at a news conference here on Monday.
