  Sinister aim

M Mohammad

The real and bigger conspiracy against Pakistan is finally out! Its not alone changing the nomenclature of Pakistan floated by PPP-Z, MQM, and ANP; it is a hidden conspiracy to change the Islamic ideology of Pakistan to Indianised, westernized the State, initiated through dozens of westernized multi billion dollars TV channels. MQM,PPP-Z,ANP is upto creating newer crisis subjugating us to India, IMF, WB, UK, US. —Sargodha

  UNGA condemnation

Muhammad Riaz

President Barack Obama has welcomed the resolution passed by UN General Assembly, condemning Iran for taking action against the protesters who staged demonstrations against the Iranian elections. These protesters claimed that President Mahmood Ahmade Nijad has won by rigging the polls. Earlier, the General Assembly had condemned Israel for her war crimes against Palestenians in Ghaza strip. Barak Obama had said on the occasion that the resolution is one sided although votes cast in its favour were double than that against Iran. USA is the sole super power of the world and claims to be the world leader. She interfere in all countries due to this claim. But the above facts show that she has double standards towards world problems. The result is that the problems of the world are increasing instead of decreasing. The low morality of the world leaders has lowered morality of the world and difficulties of the people all over the world are increasing. —Thana Malakand Agency

  Resolve to eliminate terrorists

Saima Iqbal Hassan

Pakistan is no doubt passing through difficult time of its history. Pakistan Army is busy fighting terrorists to eliminate them from this soil. Foreseeing their weak position terrorist elements along with the help of Indian, Afghan, Israelis and other anti-Pakistani elements decided to go for suicidal attacks on security installations, government properties and even on innocent Pakistani masses that have nothing to do with war against terrorism. Hence numerous suicidal attacks have been made in Pakistan resulting deaths of hundreds of innocent citizens and huge loss to properties
For the last few weeks Peshawar is under continuous suicidal attacks. The terrorist seems sparing no segment of the society. One thing which gave me the strength was the statement of Mian Iftikhar the provincial minister NWFP who wowed to fight terrorists by all means. He even said if he has to sacrifice his life, he will but not let the terrorists to make hostage of the masses. This courageous resolve is required now. Our other politicians should also show the same spirit. This is our home land and we have to save it any way. —Karachi

  Bill against harassment

Dr Irfan Zafar

Opposition legislator from PML (Q) Kashmala Tariq has praised the passage of legislation in the National Assembly to protect women against harassment at workplaces thus paving the way for womenfolk to adequately contribute towards national development process without much mental and physical strains. She went on to say that “By harassment she means making unwanted advances of a sexual, aggressive or intimidating nature by men who seek to undermine or diminish the female’s value in the work place”. Like many, I am the victim of the same harassment by a female colleague at my work place. Ms Kashmala, any thoughts on protecting Men’s rights too? —Islamabad

  Fruit under viral attack

D M Baloach

Now it is the papaya which is under the threat of a mysterious virus just like mango, the production of which was also reduced significantly in the preceding year, more for lack of proper attention/care by agronomists than the disease itself. This most valuable produce grown in the coastal belt of Sindh, including Karachi, used by the poor and rich alike as a regular diet has almost vanished from the market. It is not available since the last two and a half months, i.e. since August; the period when this fruit is normally available in abundance. The mysterious disease has forced fruit and vegetable growers of Gadap and Bin Qasim towns to destroy Papaya orchards spread over 3,500 acres.

The Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MFVGA) of the area said that growers have had to clean and torch papaya orchards to prevent the disease from spreading as the pesticide they receive is ineffective. The growers found that the disease which had never been witnessed ealier had affected vegetables and destroyed cash crops, adding that the total loss came to millions of rupees. According to reports, the disease was observed some three months ago in papaya trees, and government department officials concerned were informed accordingly. However, no heed was paid; resultantly growers had torched the previous crop of papaya in order to save other vegetation.

The fertile area of Gadap and Bin Qasim, where 85 per cent of families are fully dependent on agriculture and livestock, has a long history of producing fruits and vegetables. The outbreak of the undiagnosed disease in papayas has damaged their economic interest gravely. I request the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary and the Secretary Agriculture to take note of this serious matter and direct the authorities concerned to provide necessary help to the farmers without further loss of time so that they may not lose their source of livelihood. Besides, the people should not be deprived of such an important fruit, a great source of nutrition. —Canada
