Football: Europe rocked by fresh match-fixing scandal

Bochum (Germany)—Around 200 football matches in nine European countries including at least three Champions League games are implicated in a new match-fixing scandal, German prosecutors said on Friday. UEFA expert Peter Limacher told a press conference in Germany that the revelations represented “clearly” the worst ever match-fixing scandal in European football.

Wie withdraws, Ochoa leads LPGA Tour Championship

Richmond (Texas)—Michelle Wie couldn’t take the pain one week after taking the spotlight at Lorena Ochoa’s tournament. Ochoa is back on center stage now, trying to steal the player of the year honor away from Jiyai Shin at the LPGA Tour Championship. Wie withdrew from the season-ending event Thursday because of a sprained left ankle, hours after Ochoa shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead over Reilley Rankin.

Hero’s welcome for boxer Pacquiao

Manila—A bruised but smiling Manny Pacquiao enjoyed a hero’s welcome as he returned home to the Philippines on Friday, with masses of people taking to the streets and hailing him as the best boxer of all time. The nation’s highest ranking officials joined the poorest of slum dwellers in paying homage to Pacquiao after he demolished Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto to become the only man in history to win seven titles in as many weight classes.

India, Sri Lanka 1st Test draw

Ahmedabad—Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, and a dead Ahmedabad pitch (21 wickets and seven centuries in five days) put paid to Sri Lanka’s dream of a first Test win in India. Gambhir played out 110 deliveries for 40 runs, and Tendulkar 211 for 100 runs; both of them looked entirely at home in the role of saving a Test, not letting dot balls affect their minds.
