India fight to save Test after Sri Lanka blitz

Ahmedabad (India)—India were waging a grim battle to survive the first cricket Test after Sri Lanka went on a record-breaking batting spree on the fourth day here on Thursday. The Indians, trailing by 334 runs on the first innings as Sri Lanka piled on 760-7 declared, moved to 190-2 in their second knock by stumps at the Motera stadium.

Yahia hit takes Algeria to World Cup

Omdurman (Sudan)—A superb Antar Yahia goal gave Algeria a 1-0 victory over Egypt on Wednesday and a place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The France-born defender who plays for German club VfL Bochum struck on 40 minutes to settle a play-off necessitated by the bitter North African rivals finishing level on points and goal difference in one of five African groups.

England ideal place to host home series against Australia: Ijaz

London—Chairman, Pakistan Cricket Board,Ijaz Butt has defended hosting ‘home series’ against Australia next summer in England saying the country is not only ideal place as such but cost effective as well. Addressing ‘Pakistan Tour of England 2010’ press conference at the Lord’s cricket ground Wednesday evening, he said England was much better venue for Test matches in terms of facilities as compared to United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh or Malaysia which are in close proximity to Pakistan.

Semenya to keep gold medal despite gender probe

Johannesburg—Caster Semenya will keep her world gold 800 medal and a probe into her gender will not be made public, the South African sports ministry said on Thursday. The ministry said Caster’s lawyers, the South African government and athletics’ world governing body, the IAAF, had reached “total agreement” on the issue.
