Tokyo Asian Youth Para Games 2009
Cheques distributed to handicapped winners

Islamabad—Federal Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education, Samina Khalid Ghurki here Thursday distributed Rs, 10,000 to each of 6 handicapped players for their excellent performance in Tokyo Asian Youth Para Games 2009. The handicapped players who won 4 gold medals and 5 bronze medals in the 2nd Tokyo Asian Youth Para Games, were nominated by National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Pakistan which is a subject of great honor for the country, Samina Ghurki said at the ceremony held at the National Institute of Special Education (NISE).

Volleyball: Brazil, Italy winning in Grand Champions Cup

Tokyo—Beijing Olympic gold medallists Brazil whipped South Korea for their third straight win to remain unbeaten in the World Grand Champions Cup women’s volleyball tournament on Thursday. Marianne Steinbrecher scored the team’s best of 16 points and Sheilla Castro 13 points to lead the defending champions to a 28-26, 25-17, 25-15 victory in the six-team round robin competition. Our serve, defence and blocking all went well today. I say it was perfect. For us, it was very important to win 3-0 against South Korea,” said Brazilian coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes.

PSB directs fresh basketball trials

Lahore—Director General,Pakistan Sports Board, Syed Aamir Hamza Gillani has directed fresh trials for the selection of national basketball team to take part in the South Asian Games being held in Bangladesh early next year. Trials will commence from 15-17 at Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad and are open and all the affiliated units of Pakistan Basketball Federation are also eligible to take part”, said a spokesman of Pakistan Sports Board while talking to APP here on Thursday.

Istanbul to bid again for Olympic Games

London—Istanbul is to bid yet again for the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this time for the 2020 edition, a Turkish Government sports official confirmed here on Wednesday at the Sports Event Management Conference. Mehmet Atalay expressed his confidence that it would be a case of fifth time lucky for the city after unsuccessful bids for the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 renewals and who opted not to bid for the 2016 Games which was won last month by Rio de Janeiro.

Wickmayer won’t say whether she’ll appeal ban

Brussels—Belgian tennis player Yanina Wickmayer isn’t saying whether she will appeal her one-year suspension for violating anti-doping rules. At a tearful news conference Thursday, the U.S. Open semifinalist said she has never tested positive for drugs. The 20-year-old Wickmayer was suspended last week by the International Tennis Federation for failing three times to report her whereabouts for testing.
