It is very unfortunate and humiliating that Asif
Ali Zardari, a duly elected President of Islamic
Republic of Pakistan suffers from the image
problem at home and abroad for commissions and
omissions labelled on him, incarceration in
jails for more than a decade after arrest on
corruption charges till the enforcement of the
much maligned National Reconciliation Ordinance
(NRO). It is worrisome that this perception is
thickening and the person of the President has
become target of all sorts of rumours, jokes and
sarcastic remarks. It was surprising for me to
hear from a diplomat of a non-Muslim country who
jokingly but knowing well what he wanted to
convey, said: "When officials from his country
meet the President they keep a safe distance so
that their dresses were not grabbed".
