McCullum leads New Zealand to 303

Abu Dhabi—Brendon McCullum, it is fair to say, hasn’t had the best year, or in fact the best time of it since he launched the IPL into orbit two years ago. Expectation has generally overtaken him, he has been dropped as vice-captain and questions about his suitability to opening have been asked. But an immaculately constructed 131 led New Zealand to 303 for 8 at the Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi, and gave them a serious chance to level the series.

4th win in Quaid Trophy

Karachi—Test fast bowler Muhammad Sami and fast rising Tanvir Ahmed bowled Karachi Blues to their fourth win in the Quaid-e-Azam Cricket Trophy when they defeated Multan Region by 25 runs after an exciting contest at National Stadium here on Friday. Skipper Sami produced his best figures of five wickets for 48 runs in 18.3 overs and Tanvir snapped-up three wickets for 86 runs in 18 overs as Multan were bowled out for 290 after chasing 316 for victory on the fourth and final day of the fifth round.

KRL, Army overtake Wapda

Lahore—Pakistan Football Powerhouses, KRL and Pakistan Army went past National title holder Pakistan Wapda with narrow identical 1-0 win over their respective rivals in Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) on Punjab territory. KRL kept their 19th minute goal alive till full time to seal three full points against PMC Athletico at Agriculture University Ground, Faisalabad while stubborn PEL, under fine strategy of coach Asghar Khan Anjum, put up brave fight against the powerful four-times Champion Army and went down 0-1 at MTFA Ground.

NA speaker directs sports facilities for MPs

Islamabad—Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza Friday asked the concerned minister to provide sports facilities for the parliamentarians too, who she said, work under much stress and need such facilities for recreation. Do something for sports activities of parliamentarians as well. They work under stress and such facilities would relieve them,” said the Speaker while Minister for Sports Pir Aftab Shah Jillani agreed that separate sports facilities or timings should be ensured for females.

Wickmayer withdraws in Bali after year suspension

Nusa Dua (Indonesia)—US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer voluntarily withdrew from the ongoing Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions on Friday after receiving a one-year suspension by a Belgian anti-doping tribunal. The 20-year-old Wickmayer was suspended Thursday for failing to report her whereabouts to anti-doping officials three times. She has denied any wrongdoing and said on her Web site she plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
