Naeem powers Bangladesh to thrilling victory

Chittagong—All-rounder Naeem Islam hit a superb 73 not out off 90 balls to power Bangladesh to a thrilling one-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the fifth and final one-dayer here on Thursday. The 22-year-old kept his cool and added 35 runs along with last man Nazmul Hossain to snatch victory from Zimbabwe, with the hosts finishing the series comfortable 4-1 winners.

Ijaz predicts Indo-Pak series at neutral venues soon

Lahore—Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt on Wednesday expressed optimism for a series against arch-rivals India at a neutral venue in 2010, asserting the International Cricket Council (ICC) has shown interest in resumption of the high-profile contests in the US, Geo news reported on Wednesday.

Australia hammer India 350-4 in fifth one-dayer

Hyderabad—Shaun Marsh struck a career-best 112 and Shane Watson an impressive 93 as Australia posted a huge 350-4 in the fifth one-day international against India here on Thursday. Marsh, 26, shared 145 runs for the opening wicket with Watson and another 91 runs with Captain Ricky Ponting (45) after the world champions won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium.

Rezai claims first Bali semi-final spot

Denpasar—France’s Aravane Rezai recovered from 2-5 down in the second set to book the first of the semi-final places at the Bali Tournament of Champions Thursday with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of Hungarian Melinda Czink. The 89-minute victory gives Rezai a perfect 2-0 record in her group after an opening-day win over Sabine Lisicki of Germany.

Tendulkar becomes first player to make 17000 ODI runs

Hyderabad Deccan—India’s master batsman Sachin Tendulkar has achieved the honour of becoming the first player to make 17,000 runs in One-day International cricket. He reached the coveted milestone in his 435th one-dayer. Besides making the most runs in one-day internationals, Tendulkar also holds several other world records in cricket.
