Younis, Vettori hail ‘fantastic’ Afridi

Abu Dhabi—Pakistan captain Younis Khan praised Shahid Afridi as a “fantastic performer” after the all-rounder starred with both bat and ball in their side’s convincing win over New Zealand in the first one-day. Afridi hit a fiery 50-ball 71 to help Pakistan post 287-9 in their allotted 50 overs before taking two wickets to restrict their rivals to 149, helping Pakistan win the match by 138 runs at Abu Dhabi Stadium.

Aisam advances, Federer out in Swiss Indoor Tennis

Basel—Pakistan’s tennis star Aisamul Haq Qureshi and his doubles partner James Cerritani beat tennis great and world number one, Roger Federer and his Swiss compatriot Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets at the Basel Open. Qureshi was at his serve-and-volleying best in the round-of-32 match as he and Cerritani cruised to victory against Federer and Chidudinelli 6-4, 6-3 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the $2.6 million ATP tournament.

Pakistan march closer to Lille finale with 4-2 win

Lille (France)—Pakistan took a giant stride towards confirming a place in Sunday’s final after taming hosts France 4-2 for their second consecutive win in the World Cup Qualifiers here at the Lille Metropole Hockey Club on Tuesday. After back-to-back triumphs over Italy and Russia by identical 5-0 margins, Pakistan faced some resistance from the spirited French but a double strike from their drag flick ace Sohail Abbas made it sure that they remain unbeaten in this six-nation tournament.

NBP down PIA 3-1 in PPL

Karachi—Farooq Shah stole the limelight with two second-half strikes in the Pakistan Premier Football League as NBP earned revengeful 3-1 win over PIA) at Korangi Baloch Stadium here on Wednesday. Nasir Ismail-coached NBP were the first to cope with the condition of the turf that also staged the first leg, giving PIA 3-0 win. But reverse was true in second leg as bankers took eighth minute lead when Kashmir-born defender Yasir Sabir opened the scoring by beating keeper Bilal Rafiq with delicate lob after Muhammad Asif’s through ball caught PIA defence in confusion.

India, Australia play 5th ODI

Hyderabad—The fifth One-day International between India and Australia will be played tomorrow and Geo Super will telecast this match live from Hyderabad Deccan. An already weakened Australia were dealt another injury blow in the one-day series in India after Moises Henriques was ruled out of Thursday’s fifth match here with a damaged hamstring.
