Stocks end 2.4 pc higher, rupee flat

Karachi—Stocks rose on Monday after a 7 percent fall last week as investors bought shares at lower levels on hopes of strong corporate results for blue-chip companies due to be announced this week, dealers said. The Karachi Stock Exchange’s benchmark 100-share index ended 2.44 percent, or 223.65 points, higher at 9,374.50 on turnover of 156.5 million shares.

Categories defined for e-filing of tax returns

Islamabad—Every public and private sector employee, including members of National Assembly, Senate and federal and provincial cabinets, with gross monthly salary income of Rs 41,666 and above are bound to file income and wealth tax returns electronically for the Tax Year 2009, under Income Tax Ordinance 2001. Sources said that e-filing of tax returns and wealth statement by salaried persons has been made mandatory through Finance Act, 2009.

UBL posts Rs10.6b PBT

Islamabad—UBL announced consolidated profit before tax (PBT) of Rs.10.6 billion for the 9 months ended September 2009, which is 25% lower than in the corresponding period last year, mainly due to higher provisions against advances and impairment loss on investments. However, it is important to know that Q3 2009 profit after tax (PAT) came in at Rs.2.34 billion which is 28% above that of the last quarter.

Irregular SIMs being removed from consumers’ CNICs on their request

Islamabad—After seeking Information through “SIM Information system 668” introduced by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), around 1 lac 75 thousand complainants (5.9% of total SMSs received at PTA’s System) have so far visited the Customer Service Centers (CSC) of concerned mobile operators for their SIM data correction while more than 4 lac illegal/irregular SIMs have been removed from the complainants’ CNICs after they provided undertaking.
