United Nations—The International Olympic
Committee was on Tuesday granted observer status
by the United Nations General Assembly. The
192-member assembly late Monday night also
adopted a resolution to observe the Olympic
Truce at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and
welcomed the first staging of the football World
Cup in Africa (South Africa 2010) in another
resolution.
Madrid—Holders Barcelona suffered their first
European defeat in 10 months falling to a shock
2-1 home loss at the hands of Rubin Kazan in the
Champions League group F match. Russian
champions Rubin produced the biggest win in
their history to defeat the reigning European
champions with Turkish midfielder Gokdeniz
Karadeniz netting a 73rd winner to stun the Camp
Nou.
Mumbai—Australian captain Ricky Ponting has said
it would be wrong to pick favourites before
their seven-match ODI series gets underway in
India on October 25. Though Australia have the
momentum in their favour, following their
Champions Trophy victory in South Africa,
Ponting expected the home side to give them a
fight.
Moscow—Maria Kirilenko of Russia
upset third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland
6-3, 6-3 Wednesday in the first round of the
Kremlin Cup. The result means only two players—Jelena
Jankovic of Serbia and Vera Zvonareva of
Russia—remain in contention for the last spot
for next week’s season-ending WTA Championships
in Doha.
Karachi—The
four-day third round of Quaid-e-Azam Cricket
Trophy will start across the country on Thursday
with ten matches on the cards. Of the ten
matches, Karachi, Lahore and federal capital
Islamabad will be staging two matches each,
other four matches will be held in Faisalabad,
Sialkot, Sargodha and Abbotabad.
