Davydenko stuns Nadal to win Shanghai Masters

Shanghai—Nikolay Davydenko upset top-seeded Rafael Nadal 7-6 (3), 6-3 on Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters for his fourth title of the year. The sixth-seeded Davydenko broke decisively in the sixth game of the second set to collect his 18th career title. His flat groundstrokes and angled winners denied the Spaniard a sixth title for this year and his first since the Rome Masters in May.

Arthur knocks out Taylor

Berlin—’King’ Arthur Abraham opened his Super Six campaign with a 12th-round knock-out of United States fighter Jermain Taylor here on Saturday. With an unblemished record of 31 wins and now 25 knock-outs, it was a punch straight through Taylor’s guard at the end of the final round which left the American pole-axed on the canvas.

Stosur captures first WTA title at Japan Open

Osaka (Japan)—Samantha Stosur captured her first career WTA title when she defeated Francesca Schiavone of Italy to win the Japan Open women’s tennis tournament on Sunday. The Australian third seed, who dashed Caroline Wozniacki’s defence of the title in the semi-finals on Saturday, chalked up a 7-5, 6-1 victory over the fourth seed in just 68 minutes.

Williams claims vault gold at World Gymnastics

London—North Korea’s Olympic champion Hong Un-Jong disappointed in the women’s individual vault final at the World Gymnastic Championship on Saturday as Kayla Williams of the United States claimed gold. Hong fell on landing in both her attempts at London’s 02 Arena to cost herself any chance of a medal.
