The thin line

Dr Ghayur Ayub

Even a linguistic illiterate can see a thin but binding line, in the text of KLB as orated by its co-author, Senator John Kerry that ‘conditionality’ lays between the US Executive (the Secretary of State in this case) and the US Legislatives, and it does not apply on Pakistan. This is despite the fact that the US Executive will act as watchdog to see Pakistan implement the Bill in its letter and spirit to enable itself give a ‘clean bill of health’ after every six months. In simple language, the US Legislators have applied ‘conditions’ on the US Executive to oversee Pakistan implement all the clauses engraved in the KLB thus cleverly transmitted ‘conditionality’ onwards on Pakistan. —London

Forced unrest

Marya Mufti

African countries were calm, serene and peaceful. Everything was alright there. All of a sudden, there came an invisible unrest. First came the thirst and hunger – economic unrest. Then were hit the civil institutions – salaries were stopped and food shortage was created. This turned into civil war and the African countries divided into districts and districts into strongholds. The situation got ripe for the international forces to come in and occupy their resources.

Apparently there is no unrest in the country; there is no law and order situation, no people’s movement, no disobedience, nothing. Civil administration is intact, police are working. Everything is at its place. (Yes there is distress amongst the masses over the economic situation, price-hike, shortage of food, wave of terrorism etc.) But where from these people come in, explode and hit, kill and create chaos? Who is involved in it? Who is behind it? Nobody wants this, no one likes it, which means those who are doing this are not from within us, they are either from other countries or otherwise the agents of the enemy countries.

This is a forced unrest, which is aimed at creating the African countries’ like situation, to wrongly project that Pakistan is a failed state, it cannot protect itself, its nuclear arsenal are unsafe and therefore the international force should come in and secure us. It is aimed at forcing our leadership to make wrong decisions, and acting in panic or fury. But I must tell you, let us be cool, don’t get panicked, our response should not be divided into opinions. What is now going on in our cities, Peshawar, Islamabad, GHQ, Kohat and Lahore’s three important police-elite-FIA centres – has shown that our resolve as a nation is to resist this forced unrest at all costs. Terrorists must know, we are not deterred, we are not scared, we will hit you hard, we will fight back, we will kick you out. It is our country and we know how to defend it and its arsenal. —Lahore

Quetta Shura

Colonel [R] Shahid Zahur

It is apropos to US Consul General, Mr Stephen’ press conference in Quetta on 14th Oct. It’s very unfortunate that instead of recognising Pakistan ’s all out efforts in combating terrorism, Do more mantra is still continuing. After 9/11 Americans, went all out, killed hundreds of thousands of people including women and children to punish the terrorists. Similarly the echo of Mumbai attacks is still being heard and Pakistan which is a major sufferer in the GWOT is being targeted. The world did not show same type of support with Pakistan on the terrorists attack on General Headquarters of Pakistan . The way Pakistani soldiers conducted the operation is commendable and shows the resolve to combat the terrorism. Instead of giving full support and appreciation, a new cat is out from the bag.

Insurgency is a different kind of operation and it may take decades for elimination. Take the example of Ireland (IRA), how much time and efforts it took. Srilankan took 30 years to end this menace and it only became possible once Indian’s support to Tamils was stopped. A few terrorists might have sneaked in to Balochistan and even other parts of the country but does it mean that they are controlling the world affairs, off course not. It’s important that USA in particular and the NATO in general must eliminate the root causes of terrorism. Indian involvement in Afghanistan\ Pakistan has been confirmed even by Gen Mc Chrystal and Rehman Malik. Afghanistan is the breeding ground which is providing funding (Narco money) and training to these terrorists. It’s time that the double game should end, Afghan border must be sealed and Afghan refugees should be repatriated immediatelty.

American should understand that instead of blaming Pakistan , they should stop encouraging India and monitor their activities. They were the closets ally of Soviet Union , once it dismembered and now they are again the partner of another super power in the same country. Let’s hope that history doesn’t repeat itself and Americans are wise to get out from Indians trap. They are never sincere to any one except for Hinduism. They purge the low cost Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and many others, so how can they be sincere to America . Its better that USA should take notice of Indian activities who are having free hand in Afghanistan before it’s too late. —Rawalpindi

KBL twin sister of NRO

Z I Rahimullah

NRO brought PPP-AZ and its twin sister KLB aims to prolong dictatorial rule of present political cartel-coalition of PPP-AZ, MQM, MMA, ANP.It is tragically engineered through its parliamentary majority which bulldozes any move unsuiting their vested interests (eg,Musharrafs’ trial) or of USA, UK, NATO in the region. The chief PPP-AZ, Chairman MR Zardari hence, acts more dictatorial president in civvies, acting extra constitutionally in day to day party and national affairs from the President House in all violations of constitution. He also damned COD, national pledges, COD, Bhurbhan (judiciary was only restored after Long March of 16th March), ending 58-2B, 17th amendment etc.

I may say that the KLB cannot save her twin sister NROed coalition-cartel of present junta. They have failed nation and well understand the motives behind KBL to perpetuate the unlimited powder of present rulers to serve their masters in USA,UK on their terms.I am confident Nawaz Sharif after his return, rise for the Long March 2, against the anti poor-nation policies of ruling political cartel, bring end to 58-2B,17thamendment,end to partisan actions of President, end of opportunists, bathakhors, criminal, mayhem blood bathers, fasciasts of Karachi who did not let enter CJP,Imran Khan to Karachi and now trying to make inroads to destabilize Punjab in connivance with PPP-AZ and extra constitutionally acting Governor of Punjab.Mid term election appear imparative,however,ML-N,ML-Q,JI,TIP,Imran must join together to rid this nation of enemies of poor who have pounded them into pieces. May Allah save us,our defense forces,Pak Army from the evil designs of India, Israel, Afghanistan, Karzai, enemies within, UK, USA, Mossad, CIA, neocons, M15, RAW and decimate terrorists etc. Let pro Pakistan, patroits, unite to frustrate every evil designs of our enemies within and outside. —Hyderabad

Indian democracy & caste system

Dr M Anwar

Indians usually boast around as the bearers of democratic norms and holders of civilian rule through regular holding of elections and observing rituals essentially required by an egalitarian state. The arrangements appear to be going well with the hegemonic designs of elite class or upper caste Hindus yearning to remain in power by clever use of majority vote in India. The “Shining India” slogan jingled through media campaigns and other costly Public Service Announcements (PSAs) also raise speculations about the ground realities in India where discrimination of low caste Hindus and non-Hindu communities is the common practice.

Unfortunately Indian social system is based on the notion of purity and pollution in which upper class does not interact on equal terms with the low castes. Exchange of eatables is as prohibited among the upper and low caste communities as the marriages. One gets polluted by touching the untouchables, hence drinking or eating with low castes is completely prohibited. Resultantly social exchange activities carry subjective and double meanings as one is never sure to expect that common exchange of pleasantries and promises made by the stake holders will carry the same weight. Social order in India is hate driven and low caste communities irrespective of their claims to be Indians by birth, are despised as much as the outsiders are loathed and rejected. Such a democracy practically leads people to incapacitation and wheezing debilitation while India shines only for the elite class.

Reportedly United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is taking into consideration to recognize caste-based discrimination as a human rights violation. This will certainly annoy India where low caste untouchable Hindus, Dalits, Muslims and Christians are habitually mal-treated on the basis of their castes. Nepal, where untouchability is traditionally practiced, has openly supported UNHRC draft principles and guidelines for effective elimination of caste based discrimination. This is radically different from India’s aversion to the internationalization of the caste problem. Adding to India’s discomfiture, Sweden in its capacity as the president of European Union (EU) has stated that caste-based discrimination is an important priority for EU. If the issue continues to gather momentum, UNHRC may in a future session adopt the draft principles and guidelines and send these for adoption to UN General Assembly. Though India succeeded in her efforts to keep caste out of the resolution adopted by the 2001 Durban conference on racism, yet the issue has emerged in a different guise. It will encourage other states to raise their voice against discrimination based on caste inequalities, exposing the real face of Indian democracy. —Islamabad
