London—Environmental campaigners occupyed the
roof of Britain’s parliament Monday in a bid to
urge returning lawmakers to overhaul their
climate change policies before the UN’s key
Copenhagen summit. Around 30 Greenpeace
activists evaded security Sunday and clambered
onto the roof of the famous Palace of
Westminster in central London, unfurling several
yellow banners reading: “Change the politics,
save the climate”.
Dhaka—Bangladesh, facing critical electricity
shortages, has turned to Compact Fluorescent
Lights (CFL), described by officials as “magic
lamps” to save power. And to help ensure smooth
electricity supply to millions of farmers during
irrigation season, the government, headed by
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to
distribute 10 million CFLs to the consumers
which will save around 200 to 300 megawatt of
electricity.
Maimana/Mazar-E-Sharif—The two
teenage boys, Shaida and Najibullah, were,
undoubtedly, extremely unwise. One day
last week, the pair saw a young girl on the
street in Maimana city, the capital of Faryab
province, in northern Afghanistan. Perhaps
struck by her beauty, perhaps just full of the
mischief of youth, the pair called out to her,
“I love you.”
United
Nations—Welcoming a new agreement between the
United Nations and International Criminal Police
Organization (INTERPOL) to enhance policing
cooperation in post-conflict areas,
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the two
organizations “natural partners” in boosting
security and peace.
IF MATTERS of faith were kept clean of politics
then life on this planet would be a lot easier.
Wherever people of faith gather to ponder over
what to them matters at the deepest level of
their being, they come up with the same answer.
That there is one transcendal Being who we refer
to as God, Yahweh, Allah, or any other name
regardless of what our religion is.
Unfortunately the matter then does not rest
here. It goes from there to religion with its
demand for rituals and obligations. This creates
a divide from others whom we begin to perceive
as less perfect or in fact inferior, further
drawing a moat around our faith- based group
identity.
