Woods provides defining moment in Presidents Cup

San Francisco—Tiger Woods provided a ‘defining moment’ of the Presidents Cup, it was only fitting he delivered the definitive point in another American victory over their International foes. Woods amassed a perfect five victories in five matches in four days of competition - including snatching a crucial victory from a likely defeat on Saturday - to lead the United States to a 19.5-14.5 victory.

Lopez, Gamboa easily defend titles at MSG

New York—Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa stepped into the ring Saturday night with one eye on their opponent and one eye on each other, knowing full well that promoter Top Rank wants to eventually pit them against each other. Gamboa quickly took care of business. Lopez nearly spoiled the plan.

Wanjiru, Shobukhova win Chicago Marathon titles

Chicago—Reigning Olympic and London Marathon champion Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya and Russia’s Liliya Shobukhova captured Chicago Marathon titles on Sunday, the African star doing so in course record time. Wanjiru made a triumphant US debut in 2hrs 5mins 41secs to defeat Moroccan runner-up Abderrahim Goumi by 23 seconds and shave a second off the old race mark set in 1999 by Morocco’s Khalid Khannouchi.

Algeria close in on WC qualification

Johannesburg—Algeria moved to within one point of World Cup qualification with a 3-1 comeback win over Rwanda on Sunday and Tunisia’s 1-0 victory over Kenya kept them two points clear of Nigeria with one match to play. Portsmouth fullback Nader Belhadj scored Algeria’s vital second goal as the north Africans had to come from behind against last-placed Rwanda in Blida and a draw against Egypt in Cairo next month would seal their place in South Africa.
