San
Francisco—Tiger Woods provided a ‘defining
moment’ of the Presidents Cup, it was only
fitting he delivered the definitive point in
another American victory over their
International foes. Woods amassed a perfect five
victories in five matches in four days of
competition - including snatching a crucial
victory from a likely defeat on Saturday - to
lead the United States to a 19.5-14.5 victory.
New York—Juan Manuel
Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa stepped into the ring
Saturday night with one eye on their opponent
and one eye on each other, knowing full well
that promoter Top Rank wants to eventually pit
them against each other. Gamboa quickly took
care of business. Lopez nearly spoiled the plan.
Bangalore—A charged-up Trinidad & Tobago opened
their campaign in style, demolishing Somerset,
and the county side’s net-run rate, with a big
win at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The vaunted
Somerset top order collapsed for the second
match in a row, and there were no lower-order
heroics to rescue them in the chase this time.
Chicago—Reigning Olympic and London Marathon
champion Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya and Russia’s
Liliya Shobukhova captured Chicago Marathon
titles on Sunday, the African star doing so in
course record time. Wanjiru made a triumphant US
debut in 2hrs 5mins 41secs to defeat Moroccan
runner-up Abderrahim Goumi by 23 seconds and
shave a second off the old race mark set in 1999
by Morocco’s Khalid Khannouchi.
Johannesburg—Algeria
moved to within one point of World Cup
qualification with a 3-1 comeback win over
Rwanda on Sunday and Tunisia’s 1-0 victory over
Kenya kept them two points clear of Nigeria with
one match to play. Portsmouth fullback Nader
Belhadj scored Algeria’s vital second goal as
the north Africans had to come from behind
against last-placed Rwanda in Blida and a draw
against Egypt in Cairo next month would seal
their place in South Africa.
