Tehran—Iranian lawmakers warned the U.S. and other world powers on Tues-day against further pressures over Tehran’s disputed nuclear program just days ahead of a key international meeting. Philippines death toll rises to 246

Manila—Rescuers pulled more bodies from swollen rivers and de-bris-strewn streets Tuesday, pushing the toll from flooding in the northern Philippines to more than 284 dead or missing, while two new storms brewing in the Pacific threatened to complicate relief efforts. Authorities ordered extra police to be deployed to prevent looting in communi-ties abandoned by fleeing residents, as frustration rose among those who have lost their homes or belongings. Queues of bedraggled victims grew long at hundreds of aid distribution centers as floodwaters subsided further and more people went in search of food, clean water, dry clothes and shelter.

Global protectionism threatens ME trade

Comment
Dr. Samir Pradhan

THE most significant aspect of the current slowdown in world trade is the syn-chronized nature of the decline in exports and imports of major developed and developing economies since September 2008. Trade is one of the important chan-nels spreading the contagion of the current global economic recession. The coun-tries of the Middle East in general and the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in particular, which are characteristically over-dependent on interna-tional trade for their overall economic growth and development, are therefore bound to be affected. Importantly, the impact of the global economic slowdown is clearly evident in the trade of bulk commodities which has been hit by plunging commodity prices and the crunch in trade-financing.
