Is Bin Laden’s tape a new drama?
Asad Khan Betini
Another drama of Bin Laden tape has been mounted by CIA. The tape
appeared on As-Sahab, the Arabic-language Web site used by Al Qaeda to
deliver its messages. The recording was reported and translated by the
SITE Intelligence Group and Intel-Centre, two groups in the United
States that monitor Jihadist Web sites. SITE said the message, which
was released on Sept. 13 and lasted 11 minutes, 20 seconds, offered
reasons for Al Qaeda’s attacks in New York and Washington on Sept. 11,
2001, and advised how the conflict between Al Qaeda and the United
States might come to a close. The group said the recording spoke of
injustices against the Muslim world, mentioning American support for
Israel. Intel-Centre said the message consisted of a still image of
Bin Laden with a voice track underneath, news agencies reported. An
employee of Intel-Centre could not immediately be reached for comment
about its translation of the tape, and it was not possible to verify
that the recording was actually made by Mr. Bin Laden.” Actually the
tape drama is to keep US and NATO soldiers enthusiastic into the war
and make their stay prolong and the fact is bin Laden no longer exist,
as Benazir Bhutto revealed years ago that Bin Laden was killed by Omar
Sheikh. Gen. Stanley McChrystal is also right that ““no signs of major
Al-Qaida seen in Afghanistan” that proves Bin Laden tape is merely a
drama.

PPP: The end game
Dr Irfan Zafar
Generally people pump in more money through the advertisements when
their product is somehow not doing well. A similar effort has been
done by the PPP Government after the completion of it’s first year in
office. Had their performance been satisfactory, it would have been
visible without the need of any glorification. On a historical note,
PPP has always done its best when it has been in opposition. Mr Z.A.
Bhutto lost all his charisma after one year of his rule and people
started demanding change. Same happened to Ms Benazir Bhutto when she
got two chances to run the government. History seems to be repeating
itself poetically with the disillusionment of the masses with the
working of the present lot. Apart from financial vows of the people
and the surfacing of corruption cases, the credibility of the
Government has reached its lowest level because of the repeated
shifting of stances and statements.
The recent denial of the statement made by the President pertaining to
the deal with foreign powers reminds one of the statements by
ex-dictator General Zia-Ul Haq who used to openly say that “Cancel my
Last Announcement”. A final word of advice to the Presidential
spokesperson Mr Farhatullah Babar is to listen to his voice of
conscience by giving the truthful picture instead of defending the
undefendable thus resulting in loss of whatever credibility one is
left with.

Two Eids
Shahid Ali
Frontier province always had two Eids, as far as I remember. This has
remained quite a practice in past if not a norm. However, on this Eid
the difference was made by the NAP Government which created
controversy on ‘ Ruet’ Committee and also politicizing the issue.
It may be in place to mention that every crisis is allowed to fester
due to incompetence, lack of vision, in sagacity, corruption rampant
in PPP-AZ coalition government. The sensitive religious issue of Eid
was also allowed to deteriorate. While ninety percent country observed
Eid on Monday. ANP-sponsored Eid on Sunday tantamount to rebellion and
abject failure of federal government to enforce its writ. It has let
it happen in Balochistan whose dissidents are now in open rebellion.
This government does not know how to rule?

Balochistan imbroglio
Ahmad Subhani
Knowledgeable Pakistanis will disagree with many a point raised by
Syed Khan Baloch in his letter captioned, “ Balochistan Amnesty”
(Pakistan Observer of the 20th instant). That Balochistan is the least
developed province of the country, no body denies. However, the fact
why it is so, is attributable to two main factors: one, its neglect by
the successive governments; two, geographical location of the province
a vast arid land located in a far -fetched part of the country, very
thinly populated, perennially suffering from scanty rainfall coupled
with scarcity of other water resources. The said state of affairs in
not making of the last sixty-two years, rather this legacy goes back
into distant past.
Another important factor that has bedevilled Balochistan’s progress
all these years, is the presence of feudal system in its worst form
that has retarded its development process. Feudal sardars like,
Bughtis, Marris, Mengals etc. whose stranglehold over the masses in
their areas of influence is complete, in pursuit of their selfish
interests, put breaks, even through use of force, to all developmental
activities like building of infrastructure, schools, hospitals etc
that has to take place in their areas. Their said illegal activities
have constantly challenged the authority of the Govt. and undermined
writ of the State. That is why, during Z.A. Bhutto’s and Pervez
Musharraf’s reign, military action had to be taken against the
culprits.
The foregoing explains, why Balochistan has remained a backward
region, giving rise to complaints and grievances with regard to the
poverty and deprivation of its inhabitants. This situation has been
fully exploited by the anti-State elements, particularly by our arch
enemy India in collaboration with Afghanistan and others. Some of our
feudal bigwigs like, Akber Bughti, in connivance with and duly aided
and abetted by our said enemies, took recourse to destroying national
assets like, sui gas installations, bridges, railway tracks, trains
and other infrastructure. They even attacked security staff and army
personnel.
Leaving that aside, the Govt. of Pakistan did realize, though
belatedly, that Balochistan urgently needs more attention and
resources to achieve its potential. Accordingly, concerted efforts
were made during the last eight years or so by the previous Govt. and
a number of projects, including major ones like, Gawader port, Coastal
Highways , Mirani Dam were constructed. I suggest, that Syed Baluch
Khan, may go through letter, captioned,” Destabilising Balochistan”
appearing in the same issue of the Pakistan Observer, wherein a true
picture of what has transpired in that province has been portrayed,
quite realistically. The present Govt is also seized with the matter
and hopefully, concrete steps would be taken to accelerate pace of
development in the province.

Smoking in live TV show
Dr Ghayur Ayub
After giving a long speech on law and order, disrupted rules and
regulations, blatant corruption, and poor governance in a TV talk show
of an abrasive female comparer; he started puffing cigar in the
background as if the anti-smoking law his government introduced four
years ago was not applicable on him. May I remind Sh Rashid that mere
speech on obeying rules is not enough if he cannot apply it on
himself? May I also remind the comparer of the talk show that she
should have firmly asked him not smoke in her show? After all, she is
known for taunting her guests.
