Iran offers US access to nuclear scientists

Washington—Iran is open to a meeting of its nuclear experts with counterparts from the United States and other countries to dispel unease about Tehran’s nu-clear program, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told US media. At talks with world powers next week about its nuclear drive, Iran will also of-fer to purchase enriched uranium from the United States for medical purposes, the firebrand Iranian leader told The Washington Post and Newsweek magazine.

FOUNDED by the caliphs Harun Al-Rashid and his son Al-Ma’mun, Bait Al-Hikma or the House of Wisdom served as a library, research center and translation bureau in Baghdad from the 9th to 13th centuries. Acclaimed as an intellectual hub that highlighted the “Golden Age” of Islam by fostering nontraditional dialogue and alliances between those of different backgrounds, it attracted the likes of Jabir ibn Hayyan, Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khawarizmi and Badi Al-Zaman Ismail ibn Al-Razzaz Al-Jazari. Ibn Hayyan is known as the father of modern chemistry; Al-Khawarizmi is hailed as the creator of algebra; and Al-Jazari is considered the father of modern en-gineering.

Afghan official sees run-off presidental vote

Kabul—Afghanistan has a two-week window to realistically hold any presidential run-off vote before winter sets in, an Afghan election official said Thursday, in a stark acknowledgment that officials must move quickly to decide whether a new vote is needed. Preliminary results from Afghanistan’s Aug. 20 vote show President Hamid Karzai winning outright with 54.6 percent of the vote. However, a raft of fraud charges are currently being investigated. If enough votes are thrown out, Karzai could dip below the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff with leading chal-lenger Abdullah Abdullah.

Poland sees merit in missile plan

Warsaw—Poland’s security interests may end up being better served under the flexible defense system now proposed by Washington than it was under the previous land-based plan, an adviser to the Polish prime minister said on Thursday. Last week, U.S. President Barack Obama shelved a project to install interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar site in the Czech Republic and said he would in-stead seek a system involving first sea-based and later land-based interceptors.

BD to train 62,000 to tackle quake disaster

Dhaka—Authorities in Bangladesh have launched a training programme for some 62,000 volunteers for rescue and disaster mitigation operations in case another strong earthquake devastates the South Asian country, media reports said Thursday. ‘Training for a corps of 62,000 volunteers is underway to get them prepared for rescue and relief operations in case an earthquake shatters the crowded cit-ies,’ the Bengali language Amardesh newspaper quoted Food and Disaster Manage-ment Minister Abdur Razzaque as saying.
