Champions Trophy, Group B
South Africa cruise to six-wicket victory

Centurion—South Africa, led by Roelof van der Merwe and Wayne Parnell with the ball and AB de Villiers with the bat, recoiled from their opening game loss to beat New Zealand in Centurion. New Zealand struggled to put up runs after being inserted under slightly overcast conditions, with van der Merwe starring with ten cunning overs amid Parnell’s five wickets.  Ross Taylor contributed a responsible innings that gave New Zealand stability after they were reduced to 92 for 3, but losing their last seven wickets for 51 was a crime. With this win, impossible without de Villiers’ cool half-century, Group B is now interestingly open with England yet to play a match.

Chelsea, Tottenham, Man Utd advance in League Cup

London—Chelsea and Tottenham advanced to the last 16 of the League Cup on Wednesday with victories over second-tier opposition, while defending champion Manchester United eliminated Premier League rival Wolverhampton on Wednesday. Peter Crouch scored three goals as Tottenham routed Preston 5-1 and Salomon Kalou scored at the start of the second half to clinch Chelsea’s 1-0 win over west London neighbour Queens Park Rangers. The Red Devils played for an hour with 10 men but Marcus Hahnemann gave up Danny Welbeck’s 66th minute goal in Wolves’ 1-0 loss.

Ochoa trying to hang on to No. 1 ranking

Danville (Calif)—Lorena Ochoa is running out of tournaments in a startlingly average season for a player who won 21 times in the previous three years. Since winning the Corona Championship in her native Mexico in late April for her second victory of the year, the top-ranked Ochoa is winless in 10 starts. South Korea’s Jiyai Shin leads the player of the year—and rookie—races and is within striking distance of catching Ochoa in the rankings. Norway’s Suzann Pettersen and a handful of other players are also close heading into the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge, set to start Thursday at Blackhawk Country Club. “It’s not easy so. That’s why I need to work harder,” Ochoa said Wednesday. “That’s why I need to start playing better and do whatever it takes to keep that No. 1 position.”  For nearly two years that wasn’t much of an issue for the 27-year-old star who replaced Annika Sorenstam at the top of the rankings in April 2007.

Kim Clijsters plans 2010 around her No. 1—Jada

Tessenderlo (Belgium)—Kim Clijsters will center her 2010 schedule as much around young daughter Jada as around the four Grand Slams, planning a limited program that will put family first. The U.S. Open champion will limit the rest of her 2009 program to just one tournament in Luxembourg next month before heading into two months of intense training for the Australian Open in January. Next year, Clijsters will not play many tournaments beyond the four majors, four more mandatory events like Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing, and a few tuneup tournaments. “We have to see how it will work out as a family,” Clijsters said at a news conference Thursday.
