Media should play
role in tackling child labour
Karachi—The media should contribute effectively
towards tackling the problem of child labour.
This was stressed by the speakers while
addressing a seminar held here on Thursday. The
moot was held under the auspices of the Pakistan
Workers Federation (PWF). The topic of the
seminar was “ Role of the media towards
elimination of child labour”. The
representatives of the workers from the private
and the public sector attended the moot.
Muhammad Ahmed, central chairman of PWF, Qazi
Tanveer, Moosa Khan, Osama Tariq and project
coordinator, Ms. Saba Mohsin Raza, expressed
their views on the occasion. |

IP rights grew
before onset of economic crisis: Report
Karachi—A new WIPO report monitoring recent
trends in intellectual property (IP) activity
shows that demand for IP rights continued to
increase prior to the onset of the global
economic crisis. Available details reveal that
there were 1.85 million patent (+3.7% increase
over 2006), almost 3.3 million trademark (+1.6%)
and approximately 0.62 million industrial design
(+15.3%) applications filed worldwide in 2007.
The report, World Intellectual Property
Indicators 2009, points to a slowdown in demand
for IP rights in 2008 as the global economy
experienced a sharp decline. |

Sharmila visits
heirs of Oct 18 martyrs

Karachi—Advisor to Chief Minister, Sharmila
Farooqui Thursday visited the heirs of October
18 martyrs in East and West Districts of Karachi
on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and distributed
cakes and sweets among them.
She sympathised with them and paid rich tributes
to the martyrs for the sacrifices rendered for
the cause of country and nation. On behalf of
the party she assured full support to heirs of
martyrs and said PPP will never leave them
alone. |

Placement list
announced
Karachi—The Directorate of College Education
here on Thursday announced the placement list of
successful candidates of Humanities (Female) for
admission to first year classes in the
government sector colleges in the metropolis. An
official said on Thursday that with this the
placement lists of all the faculties- both male
and female- have been notified. |

CDGK to spend Rs 4b
on social sector
Karachi—City District Government Karachi has
allocated over Rs 4 billion for social sector in
the budget 2009-10.
The plans for the social sector include the
establishment of City Government Cricket Academy
and raising of CDGK’s cricket team,
establishment of vocational training centres
initially in four towns to impart vocational
training to unskilled youth, planting of 5 lac
trees on road sides and in the middle besides
construction of 10 more sports grounds. |
