Govt urged to implement health warnings on cigarette packs

Islamabad—A Civil Society Organisation Thursday expressed immense concern over the non implementation of the government directive to Tobacco Industry to publish pictorial warnings on cigarette packs. The BoD meeting of The Network also called upon the Health Ministry to take notice of the non-implementation of its directive by Tobacco Industry for publication of pictorial health warnings.  “The Minister of Health’s announcement on May 31, 2009, of implementation of Pictorial Warning on cigarette packs was a landmark decision in the tobacco control measures. However, the delay in its notification and implementation of amendment would constitute a severe setback to tobacco control efforts of the Ministry of Health,” Azam Khan, Assistant Project Manager, Media and Communications, The Network, told the APP, after the meeting of its Board of Directors (BoD).

A SECTION of print and electronic media is waging an unwarranted campaign against the American Ambassador Ms Anne W. Patterson. One fears that some vested interests might exploit this campaign to disrupt the bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States. And from the strategic point of view only the Indians would gain from such policy. It is unfortunate indeed to notice that the critics are confused between personal attack and the genuine criticism of US policies within the framework of right to dissent.

Robust anti-graft law exists in Pak: Minister

Islamabad—A strong transparency system of accountability exists in the country that can check any kind of financial embezzlement and corruption as robust accountability laws and anti-corruption establishments are present in all the four provinces.
Responding to a question about the existing accountability laws and system in the country, Minister of State for Law and Justice Muhammad Afzal Sindhu said that “accountability laws are existing in the country and draft laws also being prepared making accountability laws more effective”.

PIMS confirms citizen admitted with swine flu symptoms

Islamabad—Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Thursday confirmed that a foreign return Pakistani citizen has been admitted in the hospital with symptoms of swine flu. Joint Executive Director PIMS Dr Jehanzib Aurakzai talking to APP said that a citizen was admitted at hospital over suspicion of swine flu when he arrived here from Sharjah Wednesday night where he was confirmed to have been affected with swine flu.

Senate forms film industry revival body

Islamabad—The Senate Standing Committee on Culture has constituted a committee for the revival of Pakistan Film Industry which is hideously shattered in the past few years and near to collapse. The Senate Standing Committee on Culture showed serious concerns and had constituted a committee headed by Barrister Malik Shahnawaz Noon, Chairman Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC) and members include, Nadeem Mandvivala Senior Film Producer, Sajad Gul Senior Producer, Samina Pirzada Actress/Producer, Sohail Khan Producer, and senior actors like Mustafa Quraishi, Sangeeta, Syed Noor, Nisho, Jahanzeb Baig, Satish Anand, Rashid Khawaja, Chaudhry Kamran and two representatives from Ministry of Culture.
