Sri Lanka whitewash Kiwis despite Vettori ton
Colombo—Sri Lanka clinched second spot behind
South Africa in the official rankings as they
swept aside New Zealand by 96 runs in the final
Test on Sunday to sweep the series 2-0. Left-arm
spinner Rangana Herath claimed five wickets as
the Kiwis, set an improbable victory target of
494 runs, were bowled out for 397 in their
second innings just before tea on the fifth day.
Sri Lanka had to overcome spirited batting by
Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori and heavy rain
during the lunch break that delayed resumption

goal as Real ‘Galacticos’ triumph Madrid—Cristiano
Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive player,
scored a dream debut goal as Real Madrid’s new
generation of expensive ‘Galacticos’ defeated
Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 in the Spanish league
curtain-raiser. Real spent over 250 million
euros in the summer with Ronaldo accounting for
94 million euros of that, and the Portuguese
star got off to a great start converting a first
half penalty for his first competitive goal in

win at Pilot Pen New Haven (Conn)—Caroline
Wozniacki believes this is her time. The
19-year-old from Denmark won her second
consecutive Pilot Pen tennis championship
Saturday beating Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-4 in the
final tuneup for the U.S. Open. Spain’s Fernando
Verdasco won the men’s title, besting American
Sam Querrey 6-4, 7-6 (6). The second-seeded

Hamilton, Button out
of Belgian Grand Prix
Belgium—Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton and
Jenson Button, the current drivers’ title
leader, both crashed out of the Belgian Grand
Prix on the opening lap here on Sunday. Button
lost control and spun out after his Brawn GP
appeared to be clipped by the Renault of Romain
Grosjean, who also spun out. Hamilton’s McLaren
Mercedes also received a bump from another car

Shimahara, Njenga
win Hokkaido marathon Sapporo
(Japan)—Asian Games silver medallist Kiyoko
Shimahara of Japan won the Hokkaido marathon on
Sunday with Kenya’s Daniel Njenga taking the
men’s title. Shimahara, whose previous best
finishes were second in the 2004 Tokyo and 2005
Hokkaido marathons, pulled away from teammate
Akemi Ozaki at the 12-km mark and crossed the
finishing line in two hours 25 minutes and 10
seconds. Ozaki was never in a position to
challenge Shimahara’s lead and had to settle for
second place in 2:27:23, ahead of Satoko Uetani
in 2:33:55. |
